Psychologist in Oncology

We are excited to announce opportunity to join the Oncology Psychology Service. 

The post holder will provide clinical and service leadership for the Oncology Psychology Service, to ensure psychologically informed care of cancer patients and their families and to provide consultation and supervision to Oncology colleagues and to provide day to day management of the service.

The post holder will hold some line management, and clinical supervision of a small team of psychological practitioners across the cancer services. They will work closely  Dr Hannah Seabrook, Service Lead in Oncology and Haematology, who has operational oversight for these services. 

A secondment maybe considered for internal applicants.

The primary focus of the post is to ensure that the Trust provides high quality psychologically focused patient centred Oncology and Haematology care. Therefore, you must have extensive knowledge and experience of physical health psychology and Cancer Services and be able to work closely with clinicians and:

  • Day to day staff and service management
  • Liaising with other psychology colleagues across the Integrated care System and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance to inform psychological care across the region
  • Deputising for the Consultant at senior and lead meetings and attending senior meeting link top the West Midlands Cancer Alliance
  • Providing supervision and clinical guidance to the psychology team.
  • Working with the Consultant Psychologist to develop and implement guidance in keeping with national policy.

You must have a post graduate doctoral qualification or equivalent in counselling/clinical psychology and be working at Band 8 or above.

To take clinical responsibility and service management for the provision of high quality psychological services to individuals referred to the Oncology Psychology Service for support related to their diagnosis and treatment for cancer. This includes both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The post holder will be expected to have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in order to deliver highly specialist psychological assessments of patients, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological and physical health information collected from a variety of sources including psychometric tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and others involved in their care. To formulate, make decisions and implement highly specialist plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of a patient’s mental health/physical health difficulties, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patient’s difficulties, and employing evidence-based, effective interventions.

To be responsible for devising and implementing a range of highly specialist psychological interventions for individuals, families and groups with the Oncology service, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

To make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical culture and developmental and physical health processes that have shaped the individual or system.

To provide highly specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and agencies outside the Trust when necessary, contributing directly to the patients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.

To ensure that all members of the multidisciplinary team to have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding the issues for the patients under our care, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory. This may include the provision of clinical supervision and reflective practice as appropriate.
