Part time post 22.5 hours
An opportunity has arisen to appoint, enthusiastic, highly motivated and proactive ward clerk on the redesigned Priority assessment Unit and Discharge Area at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary
We are looking for dynamic staff to work in the unit and be involved with the evolution of the Unit. You must be highly motivated, with a desire to build and enhance a proactive team, as a developing unit the role will expand as the service dictates
This new unit will provide care for 2 groups of patients:
- Patients from the Emergency Department awaiting specialist Intervention from Medical / Surgical / Orthopaedic / Gynae teams
- Patients who have been medically discharged from hospital care and required their discharge facilitating
Anyone newly appointed to the Trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period.

Main duties of the job
You will be able to:
- Provide a welcoming and professional approach to patients and staff attending the unit .You must be confident and able to deal with sensitive, confidential information and queries in a sympathetic and reassuring manner.
- You will be able to work as an effective team member, demonstrate effective communications skills both written and verbal and support the team in the delivery of patient focused care.
- You will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication and computer skills in a very busy and demanding environment
- Effectively liaise with relevant wards and departments within the hospital, with patients and other providers (ie patient transport services)
- Undertake general office duties including the ordering of stores
- Must be computer literate and able to work with minimal supervision to provide clerical and administrative support to the ward team.
The role includes covering 7 day working including long days, short shifts
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Essential criteria
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good level of Computer skills
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team
- Good organisational skills
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in a reception role.
- Previous experience of filing and using Lorenzo or similar sysytem.
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
