We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Associate Director of Improvement and Transformation.

You will lead the improvement and transformation function within the Trust, shaping the organisation's Improvement Plan, overseeing change management teams and driving continuous quality improvement initiatives.  The post holder will also be accountable for establishing robust governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with national quality standards, and fostering strong clinical leadership engagement.

Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, this role requires an individual who can provide visionary leadership, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. The Associate Director will collaborate closely with operational colleagues, clinical staff and other key stakeholders to drive large-scale improvement initiatives and transformative changes aimed at delivering high-quality, compassionate care.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in strategically leading and delivering improvements in quality and safety within a healthcare setting. They will possess strong communication, leadership and problem-solving skills, along with a deep understanding of change management approaches and quality improvement methodologies. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on patient care and organisational performance within University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

Areas of focus for the Associate Director of Improvement and Transformation will be:

  • Leading the development and delivery of the Trust’s Improvement Plan.
  • Providing leadership and management to the Transformation and Improvement Team, overseeing recruitment, performance monitoring and development.
  • Establishing robust systems for large-scale Transformation Programmes, including risk management and benefits realisation.
  • Monitoring and manage the performance of all improvement programmes, addressing underperformance issues promptly.
  • Develop an approach to measurement for improvement systems, collaborating with the Business Intelligence and Data Science teams.
  • Promote genuine engagement and involvement of staff, service users and stakeholders in quality improvement and transformation initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Trust Executives and Directors to design and implement improvement strategies and policies.

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Key Requirements for the role:

We are looking for a senior leader who can demonstrate delivering improvements in quality and safety within a healthcare setting. You will have:

  • A strong understanding of change management approaches and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Demonstrable experience of clinical transformation and service redesign.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and defuse conflict as required.
  • Proven leadership capabilities, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams towards shared goals.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a focus on driving continuous improvement.
  • Relevant qualifications in healthcare management, quality improvement, or related fields.

Education and Qualifications

  • Educated to Masters Level or equivalent and additional in depth professional knowledge in the following disciplines; Programme Management, Quality Improvement, staff management, change management and clinical service redesign.
  • Quality Improvement qualification or equivalent experience in the NHS
  • Professional Programme Management qualification (MSP/Prince2 etc) or equivalent experience in the NHS

  • Successful track record at a senior position at Board or sub Board level within a large and complex organisation operating in a highly regulated environment.
  • Extensive experience navigating and narrating complex NHS organisational challenges, enabling the organisation to align change management decision making with long term organisational objectives via collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders and regulators.
  • Demonstrable experience of adopting and delivering improvement science and programme management methodology within healthcare/public sector organisations.
  • Successful history of leading strategic transformation initiatives that deliver measurable improvements in areas of clinical outcomes, finance safety, culture and structural sustainability.
  • Experience engaging and leading key stakeholders (e.g clinicians, patients & their carers and other healthcare professionals) through transformation and improvement programmes
