Applications are invited to provide Consultant leadership within the well-established East Assertive Outreach service in Birmingham with a caseload of 120 including acute inpatient episodes. Assertive Outreach teams provide intensive support to people who are suffering from a mental health problem and are at their most vulnerable. The service supports people who have historically avoided contact with mental health services by using a flexible and creative approach to engagement.

Main duties of the job

Contract is part-time 8PAs, however there is an optional 2 PAs available for those interested to provide consultant leadership for Hertferd House, 10 bedded Intensive Rehabilitation unit.

You will participate in an (approximately) 1 in 20 on call rota and you will be supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team, medical staff and secretary.

The Trust is committed to continuing professional development and Applicants must have full registration with the GMC, MRCPsych or equivalent, Section 12 (2) approval, approved clinician status and CCT accreditation in General Adult Psychiatry or within 6 months of obtaining CCT. Experience in Acute Psychiatry is essential.

Essential criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry (or within 6 months at time of interview) or equivalent
  • Be within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training(CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry; or Be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
  • Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in acute & community psychiatric settings
  • Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing service needs
  • High quality assessment skills which incorporate a comprehensive biopsycho-social understanding
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in Brief Psychological Therapies.
  • Broad experience in Risk Management.
  • Experience of contributing to or completion of a service improvement project.
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement in service delivery.
  • Experience serving a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language.
  • Knowledge of recent developments and drug advances in the psychiatry specialty applied for.
  • Knowledge of NHS planning
  • Published research or audits.
