Fixed Term Contract– 12 months (Full or Part-Time Hours)

An exciting new opportunity has arisen across cancer teams. We are looking for someone to help support and navigate patients, their families and carers through their cancer pathway to ensure patients receive the very best experience. The post is administrative, booking and liaising across departments and organisations; with some telephone work to patients and families. 

The post holder will be supported by the specialist nursing team, medical teams and other patient navigators. You will have exceptional organisational skills and be able to demonstrate great communication and interpersonal skills. 

This position will bring together several key administrative functions into one highly efficient and highly organised service. Providing comprehensive administrative support to the patients cancer diagnostic and treatment pathway. 

You should be able to demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology, ability to collect data and understand audit, with exemplary IM&T skills. 

Exceptional interpersonal and organisational skills are a prerequisite of this role and candidates wishing to apply should be confident in these areas.

Main duties of the job

This important role is to help support and navigate patients, their families and carers through Cancer pathways ensuring that the service’s prime aim is to be patient-focused and proactive in seeing that the patient receives the very best cancer pathway experience within the shortest time frame with continual communication and support.

The role requires someone with exceptional organisational skills who can demonstrate great communication and interpersonal skills.  A caring and sensitive attitude is essential as you will be dealing with patients, their families and carers. The individual will be expected to work independently within the appropriate policies and procedures for the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Track & chase diagnostic investigations for all patients on specific cancer pathways ensuring these are booked to meet timed pathway requirements. Ensure results are available for Outpatient appointments and MDTs.
  • Proactively liaise with patients on cancer pathway to ensure they are aware of diagnostic pathway expediting investigations whilst meeting their preferences reducing risk of wasted appointments.
  • Process and track onward referrals from CNS team to support services to ensure completion.
  • Liaise with relevant staff to book OPA’s in oncology and post-MDT follow up appointments for certain tumour sites
  • Work with MDT coordinator to Track & chase surgical/tertiary hospital investigations including PET scans, keep patient informed.
  • Support 62 day, upgrade and screening pathways, liaising with MDT coordinator
  • Coordinate next steps in the pathway with patient
  • Attend cancer PTL (Patient Tracking List) meetings for relevant tumour sites, action administration tasks.
  • To carry out administrative and clerical duties as requested within the department in an efficient and confidential manner, for example photocopying, posting information, printing clinic lists.
  • To communicate with patients families and carers in a sensitive and confidential manner working closely with clinical teams as required.

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
  • ECDL or equivalent experience

  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology

  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with staff and patients sometimes in distressing situations
  • Able to act on own initiative and understand limitations of own role and knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Careflow (Hospital database) & Cadis(cancer database)
  • Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions, and terminology

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Word Processing qualifications, RSA level II or equivalent
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Email and other Office applications to maximize the efficiency of the office.
  • Able to use own initiative and prioritize work.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to collate and present statistical information.
