Job overview

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust (ANHSFT), Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT), and Harrogate General Hospital (HGH) are high-performing Trusts providing acute and specialist outreach services for local people.

ANHSFT, BTHFT, and HDFT have formed a joint venture, Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP (IPS) to provide pathology services to the three organisations and other local healthcare providers.  

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an innovative laboratory as a key person who will work alongside laboratory based Biomedical Scientist, advanced Biomedical Scientists, Consultant Haematologist, Clinical Directors and Pathology Service Managers to drive improvements to service

The role also attracts a £3000 recruitment premium payable to the successful candidate upon arrival.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for the position of Section Manager overseeing Haematology/ Blood Transfusion, the post is primarily based at Bradford Royal Infirmary Pathology Department, but applicants will be required to work at any of the IPS laboratories as required.  The section manager will take a lead role within the department and hold responsibility for operational organisation of both departments. The post holder will be expected to work alongside colleagues within IPS to ensure common processes and procedures. 

We are seeking an experienced HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist who has the skills to continue to develop the service and maintain the high standards already established within the department. The successful candidate will, in conjunction with the Clinical Director for Blood sciences, Pathology Operational Manager and other senior management be expected to help lead and shape the future development of the department forming common policies and procedures within the laboratories of IPS. Experience of staff management and strong leadership is essential to the role. Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well- motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working is essential. All these skills and attributes are in line with the Trust’s Right Care Behaviours.

The Haematology department is equipped with, Sysmex XN 9000 for full blood count processing, ACL 550 for coagulation, Alifax for ESR analysis, the Blood Transfusion department hosts Ortho Vision auto-analysers for blood group and antibody testing, processing all in patient work and antenatal grouping.   Blood transfusion laboratory facilitates provision of blood and blood products to the main acute site at Bradford Royal Infirmary as well as satellite sites, St Luke’s Renal Dialysis Unit and Eccleshill Community Hospital.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Biomedical Science degree or equivalent qualification
  • HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology or equivalent qualification or experience that evidences work at equivalent level
  • Relevant post graduate qualification conducive with Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science Status (MSc)
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of profession body such as IBMS
  • Holds a General Management Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant discipline specific experience and knowledge
  • Experience of working within a Haematology laboratory
  • Evidence of Continuous Profession Development
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in specialist Coagulation, morphology, antenatal screening or blood transfusion at an advanced level
  • Human Resource management experience and skills

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the NHS Constitution & ‘Understanding the New NHS’
  • Ability to supervise and train junior staff.
  • Able to prioritise laboratory work and individual workloads
  • High degree of manual dexterity to perform complex laboratory techniques.
