Job overview

Calderdale & Huddersfield Foundation NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a locum ENT consultant. The post is intended to bring the department up to a complement of 6 Consultants. We encourage applicants with any general interest, although experience in Laryngology or Rhinology is desirable. They would have responsibility for the on-going development of both adult and paediatric out-patients and in-patients.  

The timetable for this post involves clinical sessions at both Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital. 

This is a full-time locum post based on a 10 PA contract.

  Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register, or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees, if in a training programme within the UK or be in the process of completing the CESR pathway. Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise.  

The post holder will build and utilise governance links beyond the organisation, for example West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) Network to ensure high quality care is provided to patients. 

Main duties of the job

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has comprehensive facilities for the diagnosis, care and treatment of ENT disease. The successful candidate will be expected to provide ENT services in conjunction with colleagues and will contribute to the development of ENT services.  

The trust is committed to changes in theatre timetabling to encourage more efficient use of resources, and is actively looking to pursue the provision of evening and weekend sessions as part of routine working.  

The post requires a flexible attitude to working practices, managing patients in partnership with other consultant colleagues and professional staff, and making the best possible use of resources put at the disposal of the department. This may require negotiated changes of duties and time-tabled sessions from time to time. All Consultants have a responsibility to liaise with their colleagues in order to co-ordinate their individual activities to ensure the clinical service operates effectively and effectively.  

The post holder will have 1.5 SPAs allocated in the first instance; of this 1.5 SPA, 0.5 SPA will be flexible in the job plan. 

Post-holders who wish to undertake and develop an ENT research portfolio will negotiate reasonable SPA time to enable research development.

Working for our organisation

ENT is part of the Head and Neck Directorate of the Division of Surgery and Anaesthetics. Each Division has a Divisional Director who is supported by a Director of Operations, along with finance, personnel and information technology support. Within the Division there are 5 Directorates.  

The Divisional Director is Mr William Ainslie, Consultant General Surgeon and the Director of Operations is Mr Tom Strickland.  

Each Directorate has a Clinical Director who is supported by an operational team with finance, personnel and Informatics support.  

The Surgery and Anesthetics Directorate includes: 

Anesthetics – Critical Care 

Anesthetics - Operating Services 

General Surgery & Specialist Surgery 

Head and Neck  

Trauma and Orthopaedics 

The Head and Neck Directorate includes; Ophthalmology, Orthoptics, Optometry, Ear Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Cancer, Oral Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery and Audiology. 

CHFT is a digital trust and therefore the successful post-holder will need to be comfortable in navigating a computer. This is an essential requirement.  

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a job plan tailored to meet the collective needs of the individual and services provided, to include a selection or all of the following: 

  • General ENT and fast track clinics 
  • General Anaesthetic theatre working 
  • Clinical triage, advice and guidance 
  • Patient administration 
  • SPA (1.5PA, of which 0.5PA flexible) 
  • Audit and Research opportunities 
  • Monthly Clinical Governance 

The Trust wishes to ensure that Consultants have time in their job plan to undertake Supporting Professional Activities which underpin and maintain high quality patient care. The Trust Board and Local Negotiating Committee have agreed that a Core allocation of 1.5 SPAs should be allocated to undertake CPD, appraisal, clinical supervision, audit and clinical governance, mandatory training and the general management of the service. Objectives should be agreed at the Job Plan review meeting with regards to this SPA.   

The post-holder will share emergency duties with consultant colleagues. This currently equates to a 1 in 6 on call rota. This is a prospective on call rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a current License to Practice
  • FRCS ORL or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support certificate
  • Fellowship in subspeciality interest
  • On the UK GMC specialist register for ENT or within 6 months at interview date of obtaining CCT for UK trainees

Clinical Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate a high level of experience and competence in all aspect of ENT discipline
  • Wide range of elective and acute experience in general ENT and experience at sub-specialty level.
  • Experience of clinical supervision and mentorship
  • Demonstrate experience with ENT surgical endoscopy and biopsy
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of current issues within ENT and the future direction of the specialty
  • Experience of implementing change within a department/service
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education
