Job overview

Applications are invited for a Fixed term Consultant post in Trauma and Orthopaedics, with potential for substantive post. This is a replacement post, working cross site between Worthing hospital and St Richard’s hospital which are part of University Hospitals of Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Successful candidate is expected to have expertise in management of Lower Limb Trauma & participate in the on-call trauma rota managing all orthopaedic emergencies. Elective sub speciality experience in hip arthroplasty as well Foot and Ankle is desirable. 


We over all run seven hospitals under University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, including the major trauma centre for the Southeast of England in Brighton, while Worthing general hospital and St. Richard’s hospitals are 2 major Trauma Units in the Trust. 
 
The department has access to Theatre and Clinic facilities at St. Richard’s, Worthing, and Southlands Hospitals. All the elective arthroplasty operating is done at St Richard’s Hospital. Elective Clinic and day case operating capacity is additionally provided at Southlands Hospital.

There are four dedicated Trauma & Orthopaedics Theatres in St. Richard’s, 2 in Worthing Hospital and there is a Day Surgery Unit both at Southlands Hospital and St. Richard’s hospital. Fracture and Elective Clinic areas are located at Worthing Hospitals, St Richard’s Hospital and Southlands Hospital. 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the Trauma and Orthopaedics team to provide high care of specialist services in Lower Limb Trauma whilst elctive skills in hip arthroplasty, foot and ankle are desirable.

The candidate will be part of on call rota at Worthing but can be moved depending on service need.

Current appointment will be based at Worthing and St Richard’s hospital in Chichester, where we provide emergency and inpatient care. However, post holder will be expected to work across all sites in the Trust as per service needs.

We over all run seven hospitals under University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, including the major trauma centre for the Southeast of England in Brighton, while Worthing general hospital and St. Richard’s hospitals are 2 major Trauma Units in the Trust. We have close links between the major trauma centre in Brighton with 2 truam units in St. Richard’s hospitals and Worthing Hospital. Peadiatric orthopaedic services are provided from Brighton and Southampton.

Person specification

Experience/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedics or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
Desirable criteria
  • • Higher Degree

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Relevant post registration experience
  • • Trauma experience
  • • Experience in Hip & Knee Arthroplasty subspecialty.
  • • Hip & Knee Arthroplasty experience demonstrated via logbook.
