Consultant Nephrologist with Interest in General Medicine

We provide general acute hospital services to approximately 500,000 people from Coventry and Rugby and specialist hospital services to over one million people from Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. The Trust has a revenue budget of approximately £473 million, we employ 5,639 staff, manage 1,380 beds and 32 operating theatres.

Applications are invited for a Consultant Nephrologist with Interest in General Medicine

UHCW’s Renal Unit provides a sub-regional service for Nephrology and Transplantation. The catchment population for Nephrology and Dialysis includes not only Coventry but also the neighbouring districts of North Warwickshire, Rugby and South Warwickshire, totalling approximately 1 million. In addition, the Transplantation Service extends to patients from Birmingham and the West Midlands increasing to over 2 million.

The Trust has developed the Haemodialysis programme on a Hub and Spoke Model of care with dialysis 30 dialysis stations based at the UHCW main site in Coventry, 12 at Clay Lane Coventry city centre, 18 stations at the Ash Dialysis Unit in the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, 12 stations located in the Lucy Dean Unit at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton. Fresenius Medical Care Ltd operates a 12 stations unit at a Primary Health Care Centre in the grounds of Stratford Hospital and there are 8 stations at the Whitnash Dialysis Unit located in the grounds of the Whitnash Rehabilitation Hospital in Leamington.

The unit performed 65 Kidney Transplants in 2017. Currently there are approximately 400 hospital based haemodialysis patients, 15 on home haemodialysis, 80 on the CAPD, APD or assisted PD programme. UHCW has  a large live donor transplant programme that is rapidly growing and includes HLA and ABO incompatible transplantation.

This post will work in collaboration with other consultants to support the management of medical outliers which the Nephrology department are responsible for.
