Job overview

A new and challenging opportunity has arisen at one of the leading NHS Hospitals Trusts within the Research & Development Department. The post will be an integral part of the Research Governance Team and will support the team in providing governance oversight to a varied portfolio of commercial and non-commercial research studies.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Research Governance Team, the post holder will play an active role the set-up and oversight of a large number of research projects while ensuring adherence to local and national governance regulations. They will liaise with various internal and external stakeholders and provide expert guidance and support. The successful candidate will also be expected to serve as an escalation point for complex administrative queries and mentor junior members of staff.  

Educated to NVQ level 4 (or equivalent qualification and/or experience of working in clinical research) is required. It will be supported by knowledge of clinical trials and research studies, in particular within the NHS setting. The post holder will possess excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills with an ability to facilitate collaborative working relationships. They will support the development and implementation of best practice in research by ensuring implementation of national and local policies, protocols and guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide high quality administrative and clerical support to colleagues within the R&D team.
  • Provide support in maintaining metrics and records in accordance with national guidelines and regulations. 
  • Provide support to team members, The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH) staff and third parties for research set-up and the processing of amendments. 
  • To enter and maintain accurate data within the ReDA database and departmental files.
  • Arrange and provide administrative support for meetings, including high level minute taking, preparing agendas and following up actions, compiling and distributing papers, booking meetings rooms and arranging catering, providing travel directions and acting as the first point of contact for members regarding meeting arrangements and attendance.  This may require travel to and attendance at meetings across the Trust and University campus.
  • To professionally deal with telephone and email queries including redirection to another member of the team if appropriate.
  • Provide diary management to the senior management within the R&D team.
  • Support and organise external inspections from Competent Authorities. 
  • To work as an integral part of the team within a busy department liaising with other departments and external organisations to ensure regulatory compliance. 
  • Support junior administrative members of the team (including Apprentice posts) in regard to learning, development and supervision. 
  • Provide diary management to the senior management within the R&D team.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • • NVQ Level 4 or equivalent qualification OR equivalent experience
  • • English Language GCSE Grade 4 or above or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Previous administrative experience
  • • Previous experience of delivering presentations
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of providing administrative support within a research environment
  • • Knowledge of the national health research strategy, the Health Research Authority and MHRA
  • • Knowledge/experience of the research databases: ReDA, Open Data Platform, eSUSAR
  • • Understanding and experience of Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
