Job overview

We invite applications for a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

This is a substantive Consultant post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the holder having a special interest in intrapartum Obstetrics and high-risk Obstetric care.  There is the opportunity for the successful candidate to become Labour Ward Lead.  Other special interests could be considered such as maternal medicine, fetal medicine, or education.  The post will make up 1 of 20 WTE Consultants on the Frimley Park site.   

The post is based at Frimley Park Hospital where there are a number of Specialist Midwives in areas such as diabetes, antenatal screening and perinatal mental health plus Consultant midwives. There is a strong Obstetric Governance Team and Practice Development Team.

The post holder will participate in regular Patient Safety and Quality Meetings, attend Obstetric Governance and Labour Ward Forum meetings, and be involved in formulating cross site guidelines.  

Main duties of the job

The proposed timetable, each week, which has some degree of flexibility will include: 

High Risk Antenatal Clinic based at FPH                                             0.5  PA

Antenatal Clinic based at Community Hospital                               0.5 PA

Diabetic Antenatal Clinic                                                                              1.0 PA

Labour Ward Consultant Day (alternate weeks)                            1.0 PA

Labour Ward Lead                                                                                             1.0  PA

Caesarean Section Theatre List (alternate weeks)                        0.75 PA

PSQ Meeting/Obstetric Governance                                                     0.325 PA

General Gynae Clinic (every 4 weeks)                                                   0.25  PA

Gynae Theatre list (every 4 weeks)                                                         0.375 PA

Resident Labour Ward Night (17 per year)                                        1.6 PA

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on Specialist Register (CCT or entry expected within 6 months of interview date) or, for Mediated Entrants, entry on Specialist Registrar prior to application
  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice and evidence of relevant experience in specialist areas of interest
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical research in the fields of special interest
  • Publications relevant to the fields of Obstetrics

  • Able to evaluate own clinical practice
  • Able to demonstrate innovative thinking
  • Ability to organise and develop service provision
  • Have a commitment to working within Trust policies and procedures as guided by the Chief of service
  • Have a commitment to Continuing Medical Education/ Continuing Professional Development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Ability to work with clinicians from medical specialties and in other organisations
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that for gaining UK CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to work with Labour Ward MDT and formulate Obstetric guidelines
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to manage and lead a firm
  • Direct experience of audit
  • To demonstrate innovative thinking in delivery and management of an obstetrics and gynaecology service
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates, in Obstetrics & Gynaecology to trainee specialists.
  • Able to facilitate teaching in high risk obstetrics and intrapartum care to doctors, midwives and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team activities
  • Experience of Obstetric Governance and Patient Safety and Quality reviews
  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit, directorate and working parties as appropriate
  • Research or publications in area of special interest
