Do you want to be a Lead Occupational Therapist in Older Adults Mental Health?
This is an exciting and new opportunity to provide leadership and governance to our older adults inpatient services , and retain a clinical role as an occupational therapist. You will be based in New Spencer Ward Chertsey, providing leadership and support across Victoria Ward in Guildford and The Meadows inpatients at Epsom.
The Occupational Therapy Leadership Team is committed to a programme of CPD and development opportunities.
The trust uses the Model of Human Occupation to support its assessments and interventions and provides individual and group work .
The leadership team meets trust wide on a monthly basis to provide strategic oversight to services. This role will be a member of that leadership team.
Main duties of the job
This role requires an innovative individual to
- To provide compassionate and effective leadership to the occupational therapists within the service/locality/sector.
- To contribute to the overall leadership of the service/locality/sector.
- To provide high quality and evidence based occupational therapy assessment and interventions, both group and individual, to people with complex needs who access services and their carers/supporters/family members, in line with the occupational therapy pathways.
- To communicate effectively with a range of clinicians, managers, directors, associate directors, people who access services, carers/supporter/family members, stakeholders and agencies.
- To provide supervision and mentoring to occupational therapists within the occupational therapy service.
- To ensure the delivery occupational therapy student placements.
- To lead on service development and audits both within individual services and the wider occupational therapy service.
- To be an active member of the overall occupational therapy leadership team.
- To actively contribute to the continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities within the wider occupational therapy service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Leadership:
- To plan, support and deliver high-quality and highly complex occupational therapy assessments and interventions
- To lead on service development, evaluations and audits relevant to occupational therapy
- To provide high quality supervision and mentoring to occupational therapy staff, including appraisals and addressing performance issues as required
- To represent and advocate occupational therapy within a range of forums within the Trust, ICS and regionally
- To deliver effective continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities within services and divisions to enable occupational therapy staff to deliver the identified occupational therapy pathways
- To ensure that placements for occupational therapy students and apprenticeships are offered within the clinical speciality
- To lead on the development and implementation of appropriate policies, protocols and care pathways
- To lead on occupational therapy recruitment and induction, and contribute to the wider strategic plans regarding the occupational therapy workforce
- To contribute to the strategic planning of the occupational therapy service within the Trust
- To be part of the wider MDT leadership team within the locality/sector/division, providing support as part of the seniors team within the service e.g. caseload reviews, MDT discussions, assessment feedback meetings.
Clinical:
- To demonstrate highly specialist occupational therapy skills in areas such as occupational identity and competency, occupational engagement, environmental adaptation, volition, development and maintenance of occupational skills for people with very complex needs.
- To have an excellent knowledge of occupational therapy models and frame of references
- To provide high quality and comprehensive occupational therapy assessments for people who access the service, adapting the approach as and when needed.
- To provide evidence based and outcome measured occupational therapy interventions (individual and group), as outlined in the occupational therapy pathway.
- To use highly effective clinical reasoning and formulation skills to devise person-centred occupational therapy care plans, alongside people who access services and their carers/supporters/family members (where appropriate).
- To evaluate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions.
- To complete comprehensive risk assessment and management plans, raising safeguarding concerns in line with Trust policy.
- To keep up to date with current evidence-based practice, research and National guidelines within your clinical area, sharing this knowledge with the wider occupational therapy service
- To act as the lead professional for people who access services for the duration of their occupational therapy assessment and/or intervention.
- To utilise therapeutic use of self skills when providing occupational therapy interventions.
- To have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of group theory and dynamics and how these impact on delivering group interventions.
- To communicate complex and challenging issues in a highly effective and compassionate way with people who access services, carers/family members/supporters, other clinicians and agencies/services.
- To effectively manage a caseload with people who have highly complex needs.
- To provide services which are compassionate, inclusive and understanding of the needs of people who access services, carers/supporter/family members.
- To actively forge effective working relationships with partner organisations, stakeholders and other community resources.
- To practice within the Positive Risk-Taking Framework
Professional:
- To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of clinical work and To maintain high standards of care in all areas of practice in accordance with the HCPC Code of Conduct, professional guidelines and Trust Policies and Procedures.
