Job overview

Ultimately, the purpose of this position is to support managers and clinicians deliver the best patient care within available resources.  This will be achieved through the provision and interpretation of reliable financial information to the Assistant Finance Business Partner. The postholder will be required to maintain accurate records in support of the monthly and annual financial reporting cycles.  The main focus of work will be within the finance team, with some requirement to work with directorate budget holders. 

Main duties of the job

  • To fully participate in the Trust’s performance review and personal development planning process on an annual basis.
  • To maintain existing skills and undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post as agreed with the line manger as part of the personal development planning process.
  • To achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
  • To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.  This will include supporting team development initiatives such as achieving Future Focused Finance accreditation.
  • To undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all Trust information, following security procedures including individual passwords, referring to the Trust’s Confidentiality policy where appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Supporting Directorates

 

  1. Under the guidance of the Assistant Finance Business Partner complete the preparation and calculation of monthly directorate budget reports.

 

  1. Work to the strict finance reporting timetable for monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports to ensure that all budget, income and expenditure is recognised in the appropriate reporting period.

 

  1. Liaise with Budget Managers and finance colleagues, to ensure that information contained in budget reports and supporting schedules e.g. variance analysis, staffing, income and expenditure analysis, is both complete and accurate. Provide interpretation and more detailed analysis as required.

 

  1. To respond to urgent requests for detailed, confidential financial information and advice from budget holders.

 

 

Other Financial Responsibilities

 

  1. Responsible for ensuring that all input documents are complete and accurate in accordance with audit requirements. This involves analysing sensitive and confidential data e.g. payroll, purchase ledger, sales ledger etc. and ensuring they are input into the system to meet the monthly and year end timetables. This also involves assessment and calculation of income and expenditure accruals.

 

  1. Contribute towards the development of best working practices (procedural and departmental) and cascading this to other members within the Directorate Finance Team and external employees outside the Finance Department as appropriate.

 

  1. Responsible for downloading and interrogating relevant General Ledger information into other software packages to produce additional management information on a regular basis.

 

  1. Undertake other routine financial duties for the Divisional Finance department as directed, e.g. clearing error suspense accounts and auctioning central recharges of income and expenditure.

 

  1. Under the guidance of the Assistant Finance Business Partner, complete the maintenance of registers of regular income, expenditure and pay records, which are essential when assessing and calculating month end accruals.

 

  1. Demonstrate a proactive approach in liaising with SHSC colleagues and with external organisations to ensure the prompt settlement of accounts.

 

  1. Identify where changes in Standard Operating Procedures are required and communicate to the Assistant Directorate Finance Business Partner.

 

  1. Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.

 

Training & Development

 

  1. To be responsible for keeping the skills and knowledge required for the post up to date, which will ensure that all advice given and decisions made are based on the best and most recent information available.

 

  1. To provide education and training to non-finance managers/staff within the Directorates and to convey financial concepts clearly and persuasively.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Maths & English GCSE grade C or above
Desirable criteria
  • AAT Intermediate level or equivalent

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (especially excel)
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive, creative and flexible approach, able to work on own initiative and take responsibility for delegated areas of responsibility

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent, relevant work experience within a finance/management accounting environment
  • Demonstrably good IT skills including advanced Excel skill
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS finance experience

  • Understanding the need to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Commitment to openness, honesty, inclusiveness & personal integrity in dealing with others
