An opportunity has arisen in the Microbiology department at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership, for a Band 3 Biomedical Science Assistant to join the friendly, progressive, innovative team and play a part in the transformation of pathology services across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.
The main duties of this job include sorting, organising and distributing samples to relevant areas of the laboratory including the referral/redirection of samples to other SYB pathology sites as appropriate. Ensuring that all samples are received, checked processed and cultured within assigned time frames including the interpretation of clinical details to ensure appropriate culture media and antibiotic discs are included.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the routine shift rotas ensuring a core hour 7-day service provision.
The post holder should be able to concentrate for extended periods of time to ensure accuracy and correct processing of large repetitive workloads.

Working as part of a team you will be involved in the receipt, booking-in, processing and testing of specimens to provide a diagnostic microbiology service.
The post holder will process a large range of clinical and environmental samples including but not limited to bloods, swabs, faeces, environmental water (birthing pools, cooling systems, general supply), body fluids (urine, CSF, joint fluids, saliva, vomit, semen) respiratory (bronchoalveolar lavage, naso-pharyngeal aspirates, sputum), tissues (skin, nails, bone, biopsy, resection and amputation). This includes the routine culture of all sample types received within the department including media selection. They will be expected to perform routine microbiological techniques including but not limited to pre-culture preparation and processing, correct incubation (temp and environment), sub culturing, antibiotic susceptibility testing and a variety of Microbiological staining techniques under the direction of a responsible healthcare scientist practitioner.
The post holder will be involved in the running, IQC and troubleshooting of various pieces of equipment within the laboratory and will perform the routine daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of various pieces of equipment within the laboratory.
May be required to supervise, organise, and allocate work and/ or train less experienced staff in own area and assist in monitoring a range of microbiology safety equipment.

- GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above
- Level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus Significant laboratory experience or Extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline
