This post would suit a qualified Doctor either currently working as a Breast Clinician or wishing to train in breast assessment. Breast Test Wales in partnership with Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board can offer an excellent work life balance, workplace support and good training opportunities for the successful applicant.

The post is split 50/50 between Breast Test Wales and the symptomatic breast service provided by ABMU Health Board; Breast Test Wales will be the principle contract holder. The post is based in the BTW Swansea centre but will require travel to surrounding ABMU Hospitals to undertake the symptomatic element of the role.

Breast Screening

BTW is the sole provider of the NHS breast screening programme in Wales. Women in Wales aged 50 to 70 and registered with a GP are invited for screening every three years. Older women are screened on request at intervals of no less than three years. Women are either screened in one of the static centres (Cardiff, Swansea, Llandudno and Wrexham) or on one of the 10 mobile screening units. Assessment clinics are held at the static centres. BTW does not provide symptomatic breast services.

The model of screening provision in Wales is unique to the UK. Breast Test Wales is responsible for all aspects of the breast screening programme in Wales, up to the point of diagnosis of cancer.

Symptomatic Breast Work

The majority of elective breast surgery is undertaken at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, with a small volume at Singleton Hospital. All other work (outpatient, diagnostic) is undertaken at all sites. There are ongoing discussions being undertaken to develop a centre of excellence at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, to centralize all aspects of the breast service here and the Health Board has committed to taking this forward. This will provide a case load of approximately 500 cancers per annum managed in state of the art facilities.

At the present time the Breast Service is delivered across three hospital sites (NPTH, POWH and Singleton) by multi-disciplinary teams comprising of breast surgeons, breast radiologists, nurses, radiographers and administrative staff.

The successful candidate will be given full support to gain the necessary skills (if required) to undertake mammography and ultrasound imaging and biopsy techniques as well as clinical breast examination, in order to deliver triple assessment within BTW clinics and the local symptomatic breast service. The successful applicant will become a key member of the multidisciplinary team.
