Job overview

We are inviting applicants for a Consultant in Psychiatrist in Liaison 
Psychiatry.

This is a permanent, full time (10 PA) post, forming half of a team of 1.8 WTE PLT Consultants providing input into Musgrove Park Hospital.

There are an additional 1.2 WTE consultants covering the Yeovil District Hospital.

There are 2 main acute hospitals in Somerset providing care for physical health; Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital, which form one Trust: Somerset Foundation Trust

Both services operate a 24 hour psychiatric liaison service and the Psychiatry Liaison Consultants provide responsible Clinical input for patients detained under the Mental Health Act whilst an inpatient at either site

Main duties of the job

There are 4 Community Mental Health Hubs across the county:

  • Taunton and Minehead with a base a Foundation House on the Wellsprings site and a secondary base at Minehead Community Hospital
  • Somerset Coast, based at Glanville House in Bridgwater
  • South Somerset, based at Holly Court on the Summerlands Hospital Site
  • Mendip, based at the Bridge on the Priory Park site in Wells.

Each hub has a matching Home Treatment Team, CAMHs and service for Older Persons Mental Health. There are a variety of specialist community services around the trust including Eating Disorders, Forensic, Learning Disability, STEP (Somerset Treatment for Early Psychosis) and Psychotherapy.

The post-holder is expected to work closely with the inpatient teams, home treatment and CMHS teams, to ensure smooth transition at admission to and discharge from the acute hospital wards. Adult inpatients wards are located currently on the Wellsprings site in Taunton which includes a PICU, St Andrews in Wells and on the Summerland Hospital site in Wells. These wards have their own designated consultants and supporting medical staff.

The CAMHS inpatient ward (Wessex House) is located at Broadway Park in Bridgwater. There is specialist consultant posts for inpatient rehabilitation (Willow Ward) and low secure services (Ash Ward), also based at Broadway Park, Bridgwater. This job does not include responsibility for any of these specialist teams or services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KNOWLEDGE

  • Clinical training and experience  required for gaining UK CCT or CESR including widespread and detailed experience of liaison psychiatry
  • Ability to offer expert clinical advice and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

EXPERIENCE

  • 3 years supervised training in an appropriate ST4-6 equivalent training programme.
  • Previous experience of working at consultant level
  • Experience of front-line psychiatry in either a liaison, crisis or primary care liaison service setting
  • Experience in the assessment and management of Eating Disorder

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or CESR.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Mental Health Act Approved Clinician / Section 12 approval
  • Evidence of competencies to be able to fulfil the role of a consultant in liaison psychiatry
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych passed
  • 3 years supervised training in an appropriate ST4-6 equivalent training programme
  • Qualifications specific to Liaison psychiatry (e.g. DGM MRCP)
