Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has been providing a comprehensive CAMHS service in Buckinghamshire for 7 years. The newly developed CAMHS service is based on a partnership between Oxford health NHS Foundation Trust (main contract holder) and Barnardos. The new service is based on the ‘Thrive Model’ and during October 2015 service transformed away from the traditional CAMHS tiered model to a service strongly influenced by children young people, their parents/carers and stakeholders began. The new model is based on ease of access, getting advice, consultation, support, and specialist clinical pathways.

We are seeking a 1.0 WTE Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join our Getting More Help team in the Buckinghamshire CAMH service. The post is based at the Sue Nichols Centre, Aylesbury but the role is countywide and may require clinical activity at other bases such as High Wycombe or Amersham. The post holder will carry no responsibility for inpatients.

The Getting More Help pathway offers a service to Children and young people with moderate to severe mental health disorders including Depressive disorders, Anxiety disorders, Obsessive Compulsive disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Somatic syndromes, and Attachment Disorders.

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate their ability to adapt to the changing circumstances of modern mental healthcare provision. We welcome applications from highly motivated colleagues to work collaboratively with our team managers, and to provide leadership and clinical expertise to our highly skilled and committed multidisciplinary teams. The teams are dynamic and forward-looking with a wide range of disciplines working together in a highly collaborative, multi-skilled and effective way.

There are close links with Oxford University which include a term-time weekly academic meeting, regular research meetings, research opportunities, journal clubs and audit meetings. The Trust hosts or collaborates with a wide range of research infrastructure. In September 2016, a partnership between Oxford Heath NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Oxford was awarded £12.8M to support a new NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC; Director Prof John Geddes) focused on mental health and dementia. The Trust welcomes applications from appropriately qualified clinicians who would like to work with the BRC, CLAHRC or NIHR CRN (Clinical Research Network) as part of their agreed job plan.

There are extensive opportunities for teaching and training of medical students, postgraduate doctors, members of the multidisciplinary team and other service providers, and for appraising and mentoring consultant colleagues.

We offer a £15,000 recruitment bonus and a relocation allowance up to £8,000 to eligible successful candidates.

The Consultant Psychiatrist will have the following responsibilities:

  • Developing an active leadership role in the multi-disciplinary Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), in conjunction with the teams’ manager and other senior staff.
  • The diagnosis, management and treatment of children, adolescents and families. The Consultant will carry medical responsibility only for those patients on his/her own caseload and that of medical staff under his/her care.  
  • The Consultant is expected to provide clinical leadership and collaborate in systems of supervision and care management within the teams. Consultants leadership development is a priority within the directorate and consultants are encouraged to take on leadership roles and work closely with team managers to ensure team cohesion and quality services.

Qualifications

  • Eligible for Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Registrar in a psychiatric specialty; OR within six months of achieving registration at the time of interview.
  • Eligibility for Section 12 (Mental Health Act 1983) Approval and Approved Clinician status.
  • GMC full licence to practice

  • Higher specialist training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in approved training post for a minimum of three years and/or previous consultant experience.
  • Membership or Fellowship of The Royal College of Psychiatrists

Experience

  • Experience in management of children and young people with complex needs spanning multiple agencies, with emerging personality disorders, conduct and behavioural problems.

  • Higher training placement in Adolescent Psychiatry
