An exceptional and exciting opportunity has arisen at York and Scarborough as we are looking for a strong, and inspirational midwifery leader who can bring insight and skills related to working in challenged maternity services on a journey of significant improvement.

Our maternity services are undergoing an extensive improvement journey and working with all key stakeholders to develop sustainable improvements across both sites but also in partnership with the local maternity services.

This post will provide a unique and significant opportunity for the successful applicant to develop in their operational and strategic midwifery leadership career supported by the Director of Midwifery and the Chief Nurse. 

You will work with all members of the senior midwifery leadership team, and in partnership with the Clinical Director, and Care Group (CG) Senior Triumvirate. You will have day to day oversight of  the operational management of the maternity services to ensure safe staffing and patient flow throughout the service and delivery of key quality performance, clinical governance and financial plans, ensuring national standards are adhered to and clinical practice is in line with national evidence best practice.

The post-holder will work with all members of the senior midwifery leadership team to have  day to day oversight of   the operational management of the maternity services to ensure safe staffing and patient flow throughout the service and delivery of key quality performance, clinical governance and financial plans, ensuring national standards are adhered to and clinical practice is in line with national evidence best practice

The post-holder in conjunction with the Director of Midwifery will  provide professional leadership on all matters pertaining to Midwifery and provide professional advice on the development of community and hospital based maternity services.

The post-holder will advise on quality and clinical governance issues for the service, and implement policies designed to achieve quality in healthcare including infection control, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and equality and diversity.

The post-holder will proactively involve and work with the Matrons and Midwifery senior leadership  Team to ensure they are fully aware of current practice initiatives, priorities and challenges. The post-holder will also have effective feedback mechanism to communicate Trust wide issues to midwives, nurses and support staff.

The post-holder will work alongside the Director of Midwifery on workforce development and provide operational leadership for workforce planning.

Education, Qualifications and Training

  • Registered Midwife
  • Masters Level qualification or postgraduate qualification in midwifery or equivalent experience
  • Post graduate qualification courses or portfolio of evidence demonstrating comprehensive career development
  • Post graduate qualification/training in management and leadership skills

  • Coaching and mentoring qualification

Experience and Knowledge Required

  • Proven track record of developing midwifery practice
  • Evidence of training in first line management and leadership e.g. disciplinary/grievance, recruitment and selection, change management
  • Knowledge and ability to implement principles of clinical governance including audit, risk management, supervision, clinical effectiveness, continuing professional development, quality standards and outcomes
  • Knowledge of audit process and understanding of quality assurance activities
  • Sound knowledge of relevant National Service Frameworks, guidelines, strategies and initiatives and the ability to appraise, interpret and implement in practice
  • Substantial post qualification experience as Matron/Unit Manager or equivalent, managing midwifery teams
  • Previous experience of successfully delivering national and local infection control policies and procedures
  • Experience of managing and configuring budgets and the skills to monitor and assess financial information
  • Demonstrable previous success in leading and delivering change and performance by engaging clinical teams in strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback.
