Pharmacy Team Leaders (Higher Level Technicians)

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust provides highly-specialist cancer care for a population of 2.4 million people across Cheshire & Merseyside, North Wales, the Isle of Man and parts of Lancashire.

In June 2020, we opened Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool, our spectacular new cancer hospital in the heart of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, providing state-of-the-art facilities as part of a £162m investment.

It is an exciting time for the Pharmacy Aseptic Suite at CCC-Liverpool, we have additional funding to increase our Band 5 Team Leader Technicians to support our expanding service. We currently have opportunities for enthusiastic, forward thinking and experienced candidates to join our friendly and dedicated team.  This is an important position within our large, diverse and friendly pharmacy team.

Working pattern will be:                                                                                                          37.5 hours per week, 08:00 - 18:00  x 3 days , 08:00 - 17.30 x 1 day (Rolling day off).  Weekends and on-call on a rota basis.

Part time hours will be considered.

Main duties of the job

In summary you will:

  • Provide leadership to Entry Level Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants.
  • To participate in the training of Technicians, Student Technicians and production assistants in all aspects of aseptic production.
  • Make suggestions concerning and actively contribute to the organisation of work to ensure the effective utilisation of staff time and resources.
  • To keep abreast of new developments and attend such training courses as from time to time as may be deemed necessary to develop and enhance accuracy as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining adequate stocks of materials for dispensing chemotherapy.
  • Take responsibility for cross-checking transcribed worksheets from prescription to ensure accuracy before aseptic preparation of drugs.
  • Maintaining personal validation in aseptic manipulation.
  • Refer any non-protocol or non-standard prescriptions to relevant authority.
  • Need to refer matters requiring expert advice to the appropriate pharmacist e.g. availability of drugs/release of intrathecal chemotherapy.

  • Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Aintree, our radiotherapy treatment centre on the Aintree University Hospital site

Together, working across three sites and operating specialist chemotherapy clinics in four of Merseyside's district hospitals, we deliver a comprehensive range of inpatient care, advanced radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other systemic anti-cancer therapies including gene therapies and immunotherapies.

We also deliver a pioneering Treatment at Home and Work service, are the only facility in the UK providing low-energy proton beam therapy to treat rare eye cancers, and host the region's Teenage and Young Adult Unit.

Working with leading experts from the University of Liverpool, we strive to stay at the forefront of novel treatments and techniques to deliver more effective and personalised treatments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role involves

  • Responsible for the provision of aseptically prepared chemotherapy medicines for the Cheshire and Merseyside Chemotherapy Network.
  • To act as a team leader of entry level technicians and Pharmacy Assistants.
  • Provide technical support to ensure all aspects of the pharmacy quality management system are delivered.
  • Responsible for final accuracy checking products to specification and reconciliation of items against prescription.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with General Pharmaceutical Society
  • NVQ Level 3 / BTEC in Pharmacy Services or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Final Accuracy Checking within Technical Services - achieved or will work towards in post.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate competence and CPD
  • Full time equivalent post qualification pharmacy Aseptic Services experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of GMP and QA in a manufacturing environment .
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate routine information effectively using clear written and appropriate formats.
