Job overview

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a full-time NHS Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology (10PA) based at Aintree University Hospital.

The person appointed will be based at Aintree University Hospital and will be a member of the Diabetes & Endocrinology Directorate. This post would be suitable for a candidate with a specialist qualification (CCT) in Diabetes and Endocrinology & General Internal Medicine. Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent qualifications, to be fully registered with the General Medical Council with licence to practise and listed on the Specialist Register or due to be registered within six months of the date of appointment.

Main duties of the job

The appointee, together with his or her colleagues will have a commitment to the provision of general medical, diabetes, endocrinology and weight management services.

The fixed clinical sessions will include at least one weekly diabetes clinic (hospital or community), a weekly endocrine clinic a weight management or bariatric clinic and a specialist clinic as per service requirements.  

These sessions will be agreed with the post holder after appointment to reflect their specialist interests and service requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The timetable is based on a 10 PA job plan including 2 supporting PAs.  During periods of ward cover, the appointee will lead three ward rounds and 2 board rounds per week.  The appointee will be expected to take part in the general medical on call rota and specialty rota.

There are 1.5 core SPAs identified in the job plan to reflect time required for audit, mortality reviews, appraisal and revalidation activity. A further 0.5 SPA will be allocated for a specific role within the department. Additional DCC PAs may be available by mutual consent to meet departmental or organisational requirements.  

Teaching and supervision of trainees will be an essential role of the post holder.  Level 2 training will be provided for the appointee to be an Educational / Clinical Supervisor, if they have not already obtained such training.

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or MBBS (or equivalent)
  • MRCP (UK)
Desirable criteria
  • MD/PhD

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC and licence to practise (or eligible for)
  • Eligible for specialist register in Diab & Endo/GIM

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines
  • Understanding of financial arrangements in the NHS
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
  • Willingness to participate in management activities

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Publication of audit results

Research

Essential criteria
  • Understanding principles of research.
  • Proven track record in research.
