Job overview

The Sustainability Officer will work as part of a team to develop, plan and implement sustainability initiatives as part of the Trust’s Green Plan.

The role will include delivery and development of sustainability behaviour change and staff engagement programmes, supporting sustainability communications both internally and externally, and managing and delivering a portfolio of projects that support the Green Plan.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver and support sustainability projects which support implementation of the Green Plan, including collation of data and preparation of reports.
  • Assist with ensuring that the Trust is compliant with all environmental legislation and coordinate the online register and updates to the team regarding any changes or new legislation. 
  • Deliver the Trust’s sustainability staff engagement programme and support other sustainability behaviour change initiatives. 
  • Help to ensure that the Trust’s Energy & Sustainability programme is communicated in a coordinated and engaging way within the Trust, regionally and nationally. This will include; writing articles, case studies, presenting at events/webinars, social media, producing newsletters, managing internal and external webpages, organising large events and entering appropriate awards schemes.
  • Plan and deliver awareness raising activities, campaigns and events to increase staff motivation in order to reduce the Trusts environmental impact.
  • Respond to enquiries from staff in relation to all sustainability work areas and develop and deliver environmental training to staff when required.
  • Contribute to development of related policies and strategies such as the Green Plan, Healthy Travel Plan and Climate Change Strategies, and the engagement of relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist with developing systems to improve the Trusts performance in its annual sustainability report and Greener NHS Reporting.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GSCE level, including English and Maths at grade C or above or equivalent qualifications/ experience
Desirable criteria
  • A degree or equivalent qualification, or experience in a relevant subject area such as science or environmental management.
  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area

Experience

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a large public sector or NHS organisation
  • Experience of waste and energy auditing
  • Experience of engaging staff with sustainable behaviour change

  • Some understanding of NHS waste guidance and UK waste and environmental legislation
