Job overview

The post holder is responsible for assisting the Pharmacy Services Lead Technicians in the provision and development of the technical services within the Trafford General Hospital at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

You will contribute to the future development of the technical service in accordance with departmental strategic and business plans.

Be responsible for leading and managing the technical team within the technical service.

Be responsible for co-ordinating staffing arrangements to ensure appropriate skill mix and staff allocation throughout the technical service.

You will be responsible for delivery of agreed levels of pharmaceutical care to patients within the trust and to meet departmental objectives and requirements of the patients and staff through safe and effective dispensing systems to the legal and accepted standards of practice at ward and dispensary level.

Main duties of the job

Are you self-motivated, enthusiastic, and ambitious  with excellent interpersonal skills, with a focus on staff development and organisational change?

We are looking to recruit a forward thinking, dedicated and enthusiastic individual to support the development of the ward based and dispensary service at Trafford General Hospital.

The role will involve developing a medicines management service to provide high quality, efficient person centred care and drive improvements  within medicines optimisation.

A  committed leader with a proven ability to develop and motivate  technicians and assistants, working collaboratively in developing key working relationships within a diverse team.

An excellent communicator, with significant experience in developing a service with project management success. 

You will be committed to reviewing systems of work, with excellent problem-solving skills, identifying risks, and developing Standard Operating Procedures to ensure that the service is safe and efficient.

With a strong emphasis on staff development, undertake appraisals and have demonstrable skills and knowledge with regards to training and education within your area of expertise. 

You will support staff within your remit with HR issues following Trust Policy.

Person specification

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written to communicate with pharmacy staff, pharmacy managers, nursing staff and ward managers.
  • Able to present clearly to healthcare professionals and patients.
  • IT knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrable leadership skills to inspire and motivate pharmacy staff workforce and optimise team working

Knowledge, Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered with GPHC
  • Btec/NVQ 3 in pharmaceutical science or equivalent qualification
  • Btec Diploma in pharmacy technician accuracy checking
  • Recognised qualification in Leadership and Management
  • Experience of training/supervising staff members
  • Extensive hospital pharmacy experience with significant experience at a higher level as a ward based pharmacy technician OR in a leadership & management post
  • Evidence of CPD learning and portfolio building, workforce training and development
  • Knowledge of the Medicines Act, Health and safety andCOSHH
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of other pharmacy organisations e.g. APTUK
  • Accredited computer qualification e.g. ECDL
  • Btec Diploma for Clinical Pharmacy Technicians
  • NVQ Assessor Qualification
  • Dispensing Technicians Mentor Training
  • Recognised Qualification in Leadership and Management

Analytical and Judgemental Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to analyse complex data/information e.g. when interpreting ambiguous prescriptions
  • Able to articulate information to Senior Manager
  • Able to cope with complex issues when providing a ward based technical service e.g. dealing with complex patients regarding their medication needs
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues regarding staff training and performance

Planning and Organisational Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of managing change
