Consultant in Histopathology - Head and Neck

YC72

Job overview

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) was formed in 2017 following the merger of Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust  and the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. With the inclusion of North Manchester General Hospital from 1st April 2021, our organisation provides a single hospital service across the City of Manchester. As a result, it is an exciting and challenging period in the delivery of health and social care in Manchester and one that provides a wealth of opportunity.

THE POST

We are seeking to appoint a committed Consultant Histopathologist to join our experienced and highly motivated team at the Oxford Road Campus (ORC), although there may be a requirement to work across our other sites. It is intended that this post will join the Head and Neck reporting team.  The post holder will also be required to report non-gynaecological cytology matching to the histology specialities covered. Contribution to the post mortem service is also desirable.

The Head and Neck Pathology service is one of the largest specialist units in the country and includes specimens from the Manchester Dental Hospital. The workload will include oral pathology specimens alongside maxillo-facial resections, ENT pathology, dermatopathology and thyroid / parathyroid pathology. Applications from dentally qualified pathologists would be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

You will join a team of 22 other full and part time Consultants in the Adult Histopathology Department at ORC who provide a reporting service for Head and Neck.

The main responsibilities of this post would be:

  • Together with other Consultant colleagues, be responsible for providing subspecialised histopathology for its clinical users (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust and local General Practices). This may include review of slides of patients who are referred in to MFT for further investigation or treatment from other hospitals.  The appointee will have the opportunity to participate in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) in line with their areas of subspecialisation which may involve travel to other sites.
  • Participate in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and training. The Trust is committed to teaching Specialty Trainees in Histopathology under the aegis of HENW (Health Education North West).  The appointee will also be expected to teach histopathology to other allied health professionals.  In line with this, there will be provision to review the SPA allocation in the job plan if an appointee takes up such extra responsibilities leading to increased teaching duties.
