Job overview

We are delighted to be advertising a locum post for a Consultant Radiologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in uro-radiology (urological imaging). The post will attract an honorary position with North Middlesex University Hospital.


This is a full-time 12-month fixed-term NHS consultant post. The successful candidate will be based both at UCLH and North Middlesex University Hospital. The clinical work will include specialist urology imaging at UCLH, some acute/general radiology at UCLH and support for the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway at North Middlesex. In addition, there will be opportunities to support cancer imaging network projects at the Royal Free London. Whilst based at UCLH, this innovative post affords the opportunity to build collaborations across North Central London Imaging Network. This post is supported by the North Central London Cancer Alliance. The post is hosted within Dept. Radiology in the Imaging Division of the Surgery and Cancer Clinical Board, UCLH. The post-holder will be accountable to the Divisional Clinical Director at UCLH.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder must have sub-specialty experience in UroRadiology, as well as skills and experience in general radiology and oncology imaging in order to support the delivery of services, at UCLH and North Middlesex. Both Radiology Department are very active in both teaching and clinical innovation and the post-holder would be expected to participate in these.

Perform all aspects of Urological Imaging including benign urology and cancer Imaging. This will include specialist MRI, CT, ultrasound and fluoroscopy.

 

Develop the Radiology service under the guidance of the clinical leads. 

Participate in teaching and training

Participate in audit

Participate in the general radiology on-call service.

The post-holder will be accountable to the Divisional Clinical Director. The post is within Radiology in the Imaging Division of the Surgery and Cancer Clinical Board. Imaging Division. 

Direct Clinical Care Activities: 

The clinical job will include both reporting sessions and MDT cover across a range of urological specialties. The post-holder will have timetabled MDT cover and prep-time but will also be expected to work with other urology MDTs from time to time in order to broaden clinical skill base and provide cover.

The post-holder will work together with multidisciplinary teams to develop and provide the UroRadiology services within the Department and to ensure development of the service under the guidance of the clinical lead.  There is a weekly general/acute radiology  “acute team” session covering inpatient and emergency scans.

10 sessions total

A typical week would include:
2 session MDT/MDT prep.
2.5 sessions reporting North Mid.

3.5 sessions reporting UCLH

0.5 sessions acute radiology

1.0 sessions SPA (CPD/revalidation)
0.5 sessions SPA (Royal Free/North Middlesex Network Projects)

The successful candidate will join a close team of UroRadiologists at UCLH: Dr Doug Pendse, Dr Clare Allen, Dr Alex Kirkham, Dr Chun Wah So, Dr Louise Dickinson, Dr Navin Ramachandran, Dr Francesco Giganti, Dr Conrad von Stempel and Dr Miles Walkden. 

Consultant Radiologists at UCLH enjoy an excellent work/life balance. Weekday out-of-hours Consultant cover is provided by the inhouse acute team Consultant until 7 pm and outsourced thereafter. There is a weekend on call for general radiology, with an approximate 1:25 (two weekends per year), and time off in lieu granted if undertaken on site.

The Urology Service is managed within the Surgical Specialties Division, part of the Surgery & Cancer Board, and is based at the site in Westmoreland St. It is the largest Urology Department in the UK, a highly specialist tertiary centre seeing referrals from across the UK and abroad as well as being a centre for excellence and research.

UCLH is the Specialist Centre for Pelvic Cancer Surgery within the London Cancer Network offering a range of radical and novel treatment modalities. The Department is also the Supra-network Centre for Penile Cancer and a specialist centre for complex Reconstructive Urology, Andrology and Endourology. All our teams work in a multidisciplinary fashion with weekly MDT meetings. Highly engaged uro-radiologist input into the management of our patients is crucial to the effective running of our services and excellent clinical outcomes.

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent [equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of GMC].
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC.
  • FRCR or appropriate specialist qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Research Doctorate: PhD, MD(res) or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least one year of recognised sub-specialty training in Uro Radiology.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform broad range of diagnostic uroradiology, including cross-sectional reporting, fluoroscopy and ultrasound.
  • Independence in acute and emergency radiology
  • Experience of general diagnostic and oncology imaging.

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen and negotiate with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
