Job overview

Applications are invited for a Consultant Radiologist to join a friendly and cohesive team of radiologists with diverse expertise in a busy department and a strong record in teaching and training. The applicant would be expected to join the existing radiologists in providing a comprehensive cross-sectional and diagnostic radiology service, to provide support for the paediatric services and to cover sessions at our local community hospitals, i.e. The Nelson and Queen Mary’s Roehampton. This post is for a 1 year fixed term.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to join the team of 46 Consultant Radiologists in the main department in providing a comprehensive diagnostic radiology service including CT, ultrasound and plain film reporting. Experience in paediatric imaging is essential and the post may also contain in general adult diagnostic reporting sessions including general diagnostic sessions in CT, ultrasound and plain film reporting. Specific skills in paediatric and adult small bowel ultrasound is desirable. The post holder will be joining a team of Paediatric Imaging specialists in providing expert radiology services to Specialist Paediatric clinical teams. The dedicated MDT work will be shared with colleagues in the team.

The appointee will be expected, in collaboration with the Care Group Lead in Radiology and other radiologists in the department, to oversee and ensure the provision of high quality clinical services within the Radiology Department and to participate in training and quality improvement activity.

The Trust is a designated level 1 Major Trauma Centre and has been granted Foundation Trust status.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A standard full-time Job Plan will contain 10 Programmed Activities which includes 9 PAs for direct clinical care and 1 supporting PAs.  This post also includes the training of registrars during clinical placements and during daily departmental activity.

Each job plan will be reviewed within 3 months of appointment and will be subject to change. Whilst it is likely that most of the sessions will be based at St George’s, some evening working and lists at either the Nelson or Queen Mary’s Roehampton may be needed. An indicative job plan is provided below.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • Full registration with GMC
  • CCT in radiology (or within 6 months at time of interview)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Reporting A&E, GP, inpatient and out- patient plain radiograph examinations.
  • Reporting of MRI and CT examinations including general CT
  • Performing and reporting of general ultrasounds examinations and basic ultrasound interventional procedures including MSK interventions
  • Ability to take full and independent clinical responsibility
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and trainee specialists
  • Experience in trauma imaging and MDTs

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to evaluate own radiological practice
  • Experience with paediatric patients
Desirable criteria
  • Computer, PACS and VR software literate

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of legislation relating to radiology e.g. IR(ME)R 2000
  • Understand the principles of Clinical Governance
