Junior Sister/ Junior Charge Nurse - Heart Failure Unit

Job overview

To support and deputise for the Ward Sister to ensure the provision of excellent nursing care and the effective management of staff and other resources. To co-ordinate the day-to-day management of the ward/department and ensure excellent communication is maintained. To ensure that there are education and training opportunities for all staff, including pre and post registration students and /or providing specialist knowledge if working in a clinical area where a post registration course is essential.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic leader, who has a passion for providing high quality care, to deputise in the management of the Heart Failure Unit.

We are proud to say that the Heart Failure Unit remains the only of its type in Europe. The unit offers an exciting variety of patient management including those with acute decompensated heart failure, those with new or chronic heart failure who require device therapy, and in addition, those post myocardial infarction and those who may be at the end stage of their heart failure. 

Come and join our ambitious and progressive team at an exciting time of expansion for the Cardiovascular Directorate at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust. Knowledge and experience of Cardiology or Heart Failure nursing is essential, along with experience of taking charge of a ward, leading shifts, ward rounds, MDTs, and managing junior staff.

We have an excellent and dedicated Heart Failure resource  including 5 Heart Failure Consultants and 5 Heart Failure Nurse Specialists, in addition to a Highly Specialised Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Dietician. This breadth of experience and knowledge will ensure you have the opportunity and support to understand the complete patient journey and will provide the springboard for development opportunities such as following the career pathway towards being an advanced nurse practitioner.

Person specification

Professional/Clinical Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • RN (general)
  • Minimum of three years post registration experience, of which 12 months must be in cardiology as a band 6
  • Must be competent in 12 lead ECG and rhythm strip interpretation
  • Awareness of professional responsibilities
  • Knowledge of current nursing issues.
Desirable criteria
  • Studying towards a MSC

Organisational Management

Essential criteria
  • Ability to prioritise work and to co-ordinate the ward or department
  • Ability to assess, plan and evaluate patient care according to individual needs.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the application of leadership skills
  • Has good verbal and written communication abilities
Desirable criteria
  • Computer literate

Education and Research

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the application of evidence based practice
  • Relevant Specialist Course/s e.g. ECG, Arrhythmia.
  • Evidence of Professional Development
  • Must undertake relevant work related course/s e.g. management within 12 months of being appointed
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the assessment process for student nurses
  • Has knowledge of Individual performance review
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching experience
  • Recognised Mentorship/Teaching qualification e.g. ENB 998, Mentorship Module.
  • Attended appraisal training.
