We are looking to recruit a senior radiotherapy engineer to join the radiotherapy physics team at The Royal Free Hospital.
The successful candidate would be expected perform preventative maintenance and quality assurance on a wide range of radiotherapy equipment and to liaise with equipment manufacturers to maintain the availability of the treatment units. For this post the successful candidate would have already completed the Varian training courses.
The successful candidate will also participate in routine q.a. of the treatment and dosimetry equipment and is encouraged to support clinical dosimery measurements where appropriate.
In addition, the post acts as the deputy and primary support to the Radiotherapy QA Manager for Radiotherapy’s ISO 9001 accredited quality management system and maintains the Radiotherapy Quality Assurance system management software “Q-Pulse”.
There is approximately a 60:40 split in the above roles with engineering taking precedence.

The Royal Free Radiotherapy service has 2 Varian Truebeam linear accelerators, a Xstrahl system, a Canon (Toshiba) large bore CT-scanner, access to PET and MRI and currently the Philips Pinnacle treatment planning system ver16.2. along with a wide range of dosimetry and engineering support equipment. Varian’s Aria patient management system integrates the service with the accredited quality management system supported on “Q-Pulse”.

- BSc/HNC/BEng or equivalent containing a major electronic engineering component.
- Relevant MSc or higher degree or equivalent level of knowledge.
- Registered Clinical Technologist or eligible for registration.
- Certified manufacturer’s training on radiotherapy treatment equipment.
- Certified manufacturer’s training on same treatment equipment from same manufacturer to that in Radiotherapy at RFL.

- Incorporated Status with professional organization eg IEng or eligible for.
Experience

- Advanced knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, electromechanical and computer systems
- Specialist training and practical experience on operation and maintenance of linear accelerators, Orthovoltage and superficial therapy machines.
- Proven record of independent practice covering preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, diagnosing faults and repairing medical equipment.
- Knowledge of high voltage, high power control systems, RF generation, high vacuum systems, electromechanical systems and electromagnetic systems.
- Practical knowledge of Accredited Radiotherapy QA systems and procedures.
- Broad understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure or staff error.
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines. (for e.g. ISO 9001:2015, Health and safety, COSHH as applied to a radiotherapy service)
- Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: ionising radiation, non-ionising radiation, high voltage electrical hazards, Rf generation, high pressure gases, solvents, oils and manual handling of heavy objects.

- Able to priorities and manage own workload with effective time management skills. Flexible, able to adjust commitments when required and work to tight deadlines. (e.g. work autonomously on complex radiotherapy equipment,
- Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own areas of competence. (e.g. ability to fault find and repair complex radiotherapy equipment) and to recognise when advice must be sought.
- Ability to motivate, teach and train others, including other non-technical staff groups, on highly specialist subjects.
- Analytical problem solving ability (e.g. interpreting and understanding complex circuit diagrams), maintain frequent periods of prolonged concentration, and able to resolve complex issues and situations that are often unpredictable and do not fit a standard pattern.
- Able to communicate highly complex information to other healthcare professionals and equipment manufacturers.
- Able to perform quality assurance measurements autonomously on complex radiotherapy equipment
- Able to develop systems and write software and scripts relevant to computer systems supporting radiotherapy.
