The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium-sized acute and community trust with over 525 beds and over 600 community staff, serving more than 600,000 people living across Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.

Are you looking for a new challenge we have an exciting opportunity in our oncology services. for a full time band 7 Cancer Practice Development Nurse to support our extensive oncology nursing and clinical support teams within the Trust, 

We are looking to recruit a nurse  with highly  developed  interpersonal, skills, with good communication skills and  have implemented service improvements  with in oncology services. This role requires an experienced and motivated individual to support the development of the national and local cancer agenda by support the teams to deliver a sustainable model of cancer and SACT related clinical training and education.  You will be a registered nurse educated to degree level, SACT trained with a current registration, have significant experience working within cancer care and be enthusiastic and experienced in delivering education and training to others  to support support the development of best practice  within cancer across the organization, you will be expected to work closely with other practice development nurses within the Trust .

Main duties of the job

The key emphasis of the role will be to develop, deliver and evaluate cancer and SACT education programs within the trust., this will involve engaging with  local and national  cancer agenda.  The role will require you to lead on developing training and practice development packages and involve setting up and delivering formal study days within the Trust, working collaboratively with other clinical nurse specialist and practice development nurses, with a key objective to ensure standardization and shared competency assessment frameworks across the trust.

the primary purpose of this role is to ensure  practice change in line with best practice  related to priorities around the national cancer workforce strategy delivering ongoing education, training and support for the cancer and oncology nursing workforce. 

You will have responsibility for the overall continuing workforce development of staff within the specialty.  You will need to actively participate in audit and service improvement activity to improve patient care and outcomes this requires a postiche role model and excellent nursing leadership, you will be highly visible in clinical areas in order to maximize opportunities for training and educational input across the cancer workforce contributing to and developing clinical and education guidelines and protocols where applicable and support with undertaking a Training Needs Analysis and maintain a register of training using the tools within the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To work collaboratively with other practice development and other Trust colleagues on Education Quality Reviews in relation to the quality of the clinical learning environment
  • Support the Trust monthly delivery of Sage and Thyme training in conjunction with the Nurse consultant for End-of-Life Care
  • Demonstrate a high level of communication and customer care skills with patients.
  • To act as a coach and a mentor for staff within oncology
  • Undertake a training needs analysis and maintain registers of training as appropriate.
  • Lead on cancer and oncology practice development initiatives.
  • Develop appropriate competency based clinical skills education and develop relevant competency assessment documents.
  • To support and maintain the delivery and quality of services provided within the care environment including the care delivered, setting of nursing standards and leadership of the team.
  • Lead on the development of and implementation of nursing policies affecting education within cancer/ SACT services. Participate and contribute to the yearly service review and annual training for SACT service.
  • Identify appropriate key performance indicators by which the success is evaluated including the impact patient care, patient outcomes, staff retention, sickness & absences and clinical incidences.
  • Maintain records of training undertaken by each member of staff and disseminating this information amongst senior nursing staff, ensuring that this is recorded via OLM/ESR this includes undertaking an analysis and evaluate each project being undertaken and implement changes as required based on the findings.
  • To help clinical areas by advising on the formal & informal educational opportunities to assist nurses in developing themselves in accordance with their appraisal objectives & their clinical development.
  • Act as a resource for junior staff and support developmental projects and provide advice to staff on resources within and outside the trust.
  • To support the development of and implementation of band 5 and band 6 rotational post within the Trust and the North London Hospice
  • To ensure own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and latest evidence based practice

Essential criteria
  • Ability to manage own workload with strong organisational ability. Preparation and writing report
  • Effective communication skills and ability to liaise with all members of the multi - disciplinary team
  • Wide range of clinical skill set with experience to teach and develop similar skills
  • Ability to be a critical thinker and take initiative in evidence ebased improvements to development of staff
  • Ability to create teaching and development programmes
  • Able to use common software including Microsoft packages Good IT skills Effective time management
  • Ability to manage projects
  • Presentation skills Online facilitation of teaching/development
  • Facilitation of simulation /clinical scenarios with debrief discussions

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered Evidence of own continuing professional development and relevant qualifications related to Oncology
  • Post registration teaching/mentorship/Practice Supervisor and Assessor qualification
  • Professional Nurse Advocate qualification and/or resilience based clinical supervision training /Coaching qualification specialist cancer
  • Qualification or recognised study SACT qualification of SACT passport
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards SACT passport
  • Extensive experience within oncology setting at band 6 and above

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent employment within an acute setting or a setting which provides a wide range of clinical skill set including SACT delivery venepuncture & cannulation, nasogastric insertion, catheterisation skills etc
  • Demonstrates evidence of developing innovative practice and of being proactive in managing change and challenging unsafe practices
  • Experience of facilitation of learning and development/informal teaching with demonstrable enthusiasm for practice development and supporting junior staff
  • Experience of creating a positive learning environment conducive to learning and just and learning culture

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Research knowledge and able to demonstrate it’s relation to practice development
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Awareness of current development in Education, Development and national papers contributing to staff development
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of competency frameworks, Trust policies and procedure
