Trosolwg o'r swydd

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time permanent  Deputy Head of Optometry. The Role involves undertaking the operational management of the optometry department and involve a broad range of complex, non-routine and comprehensive optometric work of a specialised nature within secondary eye care.

The post holder will  work closely with the Head of Department, clinical support service manager, divisional leads, service leads consultant & principal optometrists and  to actively participate in ongoing development of the Hospital’s Optometric Services.

The post holder will be responsible for the training and supervision of new department members and be responsible for creating and updating patient management clinical guidance and protocols. As well as being involved in the department quality and assurance procedures as well as educational and research objectives of the department.

To work with the Head of Optometry in leading the Optometry Department across Moorfields sites.

To work with the Head of Department to ensure the hospital provides a comprehensive Optometry Service, including national and international complex tertiary referrals.

To assist the Head of Optometry with managing the Optometry Service (over 200 staff) across all Trust sites (City Rd, North and South Divisions).

To work alongside the clinical support service manager to ensure the requirements of the service are met.

Liaise with & support the optometrist leads for Moorfields Divisions to ensure that the requirements of outreach clinics and service directorates are met.

Provide expert optometric opinion to optometric and non-optometric colleagues on the management of complex cases within the optometry clinics.

To undertake highly specialist clinical activity requiring extensive knowledge, experience and expertise in optometry clinics

To work with the Head of Optometry in leading the Optometry Department across Moorfields sites.

To assist the Head of Optometry in the development of the Optometry Service.

To represent the Head of Department, the hospital and the optometric profession nationally and internationally.

To deputise for the Head of Optometry on committees both internal and external to the Trust.

To assist the Head of Optometry in realising the strategic goals of the department.

To be a clinical lead for optometrist within the service.

To work with the Head of Department to ensure the hospital provides a comprehensive Optometry Service, including national and international complex tertiary referrals.

To assist the Head of Optometry with managing the Optometry Service (over 200 staff) across all Trust sites (City Rd, North and South Divisions). 

To work alongside the clinical support service manager to ensure the requirements of the service are met.

Liaise with & support the optometrist leads for Moorfields Divisions to ensure that the requirements of outreach clinics and service directorates are met.

Liaise with the optometry service leads to support the development of the optometrists within the sub-speciality services.

Ensure that adequate numbers of appropriately trained optometrists are allocated to the individual elements of the service (optometrist staff rostering), liaising with lead clinicians and managers across Moorfields divisions.

To be responsible for the day to day running of the Optometry Service in the City Rd Division.

To manage Principal, Senior & Supervising Optometrists at City Rd. To ensure the Trust’s appraisal system is employed & identify the training and development needs of optometrists and supplementary staff within the department.

Education/Qualification

  • Registration with the General Optical Council
  • Registered as an Independent prescriber with College of Optometrists.
  • Post graduate optometric qualifications

  • Registered Examiner with the College of Optometrists.
  • Doctor of Optometry (PhD).
  • Post-graduate Management Qualifications e.g. Management Diploma.
  • Fellowship of the College of Optometrists
  • Fellowship of the British Contact lens association
  • Registered pre-registration Supervisor

Experieince

  • 8 years post registration clinical experience with at least 5 years in a hospital specialist medical contact lens clinic.
  • Experience working with adult patients who are visually impaired & patients with learning disabilities.
  • Experience of managing budgets
  • Experience of managing clinical services
  • Experience of dealing with HR issues (sickness, performance, disciplinary).
  • Experience of recruitment and selection processes
  • Training & experience of team management.
  • Experience of teaching optometrists & ophthalmologists at undergraduate and post-graduate level and supervision of trainee optometrists.
  • Experience teaching/lecturing on secondary care optometric practice

Knowledge

  • Advanced theoretical & practical knowledge across a comprehensive range of hospital optometry
  • Advanced theoretical & practical knowledge in the clinical assessment and management of complex secondary care cases
  • Knowledge and experience to competently undertake highly specialist & advanced clinical extended roles that include tertiary referral cases of rare and complex conditions.
  • Detailed knowledge of the indications and contra-indications of treatment options in subspecialty services
  • Knowledge of complex ophthalmic surgical techniques
  • Broad understanding of the developing roles of the ophthalmic professions, within primary, secondary & tertiary care

Skills/abilities

  • Comprehensive Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy of Anterior and posterior eye with a range of auxiliary lenses. o The interpretation of medical imaging including: Topography, OCT and visual fields
  • Independently undertake highly specialist advanced clinical roles (working to agreed protocols). To include tertiary referral cases of rare and complex medical conditions.
  • Ability to independently assess and make clinical decisions.
  • • Ability to effectively communicate complex information in a range of situations e.g. clinical info to patients.
  • • Ability to effectively communicate complex service information to both internal and external stakeholders
  • • Advanced written communication skills for writing clinical case notes and reports.
  • • Advanced planning and organisational skills
