The Ophthalmology service is a busy dynamic department seeing up to 70000 outpatients per year and performing over 10 000 surgical procedures across the subspecialties which are all represented. As part of a large acute trust there is considerable interaction with other specialities both surgical and medical giving rise for the opportunity for research and the management of complex patients. King’s is a busy trauma centre. There is a coordinated teaching and training programme across South London and involvement in undergraduate medical student teaching for KCL.

Clinical duties include investigation and treatment of patients with oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital disease and allied disorders. Some general ophthalmology provisions and on call are required and the fellow will be on call for all urgent adnexal (oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital) cases.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

Clinical duties for this post comprise the investigation and treatment of patients with oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital disease and allied disorders. Tenure of the post is initially for 12 months but may be renewable by mutual consent. The ideal candidate would be a CCT holder or equivalent who wishes to specialize in the surgical treatment of oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital diseases. The post is not a Deanery TSC, however, is recognised by the Royal College of Ophthalmologist.

Some general ophthalmology provisions and on call are required and the fellow will be on call for all urgent adnexal (oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital) cases. The post holder will gain surgical experience commensurate with their prior experience and ability.

The post will be predominantly or exclusively adnexal in nature but there may be occasions when the appointee has to cover more general clinical duties, which are based at King’s College Hospital and/or Queen Mary's Hospital. The following information in this paragraph relates only to these general duties, which are likely to include the management of out-patients and in-patients, including ward referrals.

  • Medical Degree
  • Minimum of 5 years’ full time (or equivalent part time) hospital service in the ST5-6 grade or higher or equivalent
  • Ability to perform high volume unsupervised cataract surgery
  • MRCOphth or equivalent
  • Full registration (or eligible for full registration) with the General Medical Council
