The post is based in the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Rheumatology department at Hammersmith Hospital and it requires experience and special interest in the field of large vessel vasculitis. In our Departments, a multidisciplinary approach to the management of rheumatic diseases is regarded as a prerequisite for delivering high quality patient care and we work closely and collaboratively with other specialties such as Renal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology and Radiology. The ICHNT Rheumatology department serves the north west London area and is recognised as national and international leading centres in the treatment of rheumatic conditions.

Furthermore, we work closely with local community musculoskeletal services providers. The post is substantive and 100% NHS but successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to develop their specialist interest and participate into research within the Vasculitis centre and Imperial College London. They will also be expected to contribute to regular clinical teaching for medical students and all grades of medical trainees. The post is full-time suitable for newly qualified consultants or more experienced ones and it is an exciting opportunity to join a Rheumatology department recognised for its exceptional care and multidisciplinary approach.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will deliver a broad range of Rheumatology services including outpatient general rheumatology clinics, large vessels vasculitis specialist clinic, inpatient Rheumatology reviews, participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, triage of outpatient referrals, and providing ‘advice and guidance’ to referrers. There is no GIM or out-of-hours commitment. The department provides training for specialist trainees and has a history of collaborating in translational and bench research through close working relationships with Imperial College.

The successful candidate will be expected and supported to contribute to research, teaching and training. They will work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management and operational efficiency. They will be expected to maintain up-to-date portfolios for annual appraisal, CPD and revalidation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a substantive full time post based at Hammersmith Hospital. The role entails:

  • 3.5 General Rheumatology outpatient clinics per week
  • 1 Rheumatology specialist service clinic - LVV
  • Weekly inpatient referrals review
  • Weekly DCC meetings
  • Support the nurse team in dealing with clinical queries
  • Contribute to additional NHS responsibilities by taking roles such as clinical manager, clinical governance lead or clinical audit lead
  • Referrals triage and A&G according to rota
  • Provide training for specialist trainees, and contributing to the training program by acting as educational supervisor and unit training lead
  • Contribute to translation research in the field of large vessel vasculitis
  • Contribute to undergraduates teaching and examinations
  • Maintaining up-to-date portfolios for annual appraisal, CPD and revalidation.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC’s register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC’s Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • Appropriate Royal College Membership

Knowledge/ skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in General Rheumatology
  • Experience and special interest in vasculitis
  • IT Skills and computer literacy

  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff
