Hello, my name is Justine and I am one of the occupational therapists in the children’s learning disability service within LSCFT. During my time working for the trust I have worked in various roles, some of which were, ‘non-traditional OT roles, such as a learning disability practitioner. For me, this highlights the leadership within the trust and how it values the skills of occupational therapists and AHPs in what they can bring to the team as holistic practitioners using occupationally focussed assessments and interventions to support young people and their families.
The children’s learning disability teams are extremely caring and we pride ourselves in being creative and innovative and driven to offer a service which is genuinely person centred. We are a service which is led by the children/young people and families whom we support. Every approach and intervention offered is designed to meet individual need and preference. As part of the work I do I support families with sleep difficulties, self care tasks, understanding their child’s sensory needs and supporting engagement through meaningful activity. This may be through parent work shops or working directly with young people and their families. Through such an approach we are continually learning, developing and findings different ways of working, to meet the needs and wishes of the individuals we work with. All members of the team is listened to and all views play a vital role in shaping and developing the service.
