Ward 40 is a respiratory ward caring for patient who have a range of respiratory conditions. The successful candidate will be part of an integrated service working alongside the specialist teams.

The post holder will work closely with and support the department/ward manager and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care, staff and service development within the department/ward environment.  The post holder will supervise junior qualified and/or unqualified staff including student nurses whilst maintaining a safe working environment.

  1. To demonstrate competence in a wide range of expanded roles including: Venepuncture, cannulation, ECG recording & basic interpretation, plastering, requesting and obtaining pathology samples, utilising PGDs, requesting x-rays.

 

  1. Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical decision making skills.

 

  1. Excellent communication skills to ensure that patients, relatives and the multi-disciplinary team are able to understand the complex needs of the patients.

 

  1. To complete Trust documentation/liaise with all agencies regarding the possibility of any Safeguarding Adult/Children issues.
  2. Maintain effective communication within the team by ensuring that information is transmitted at handover and is documented either in the notes, appropriate folders or on the computer system as necessary.

 

  1. To record accurately all documentation relating to a patients episode within the department in the appropriate systems for future referencing as required.

 

  1. Assist in maintaining a calm, efficient and cost effective service.

 

  1. Assist in Co-ordinate/facilitate new staff’s orientation to the department.

 

  1. Undertake individual responsibilities as delegated.

TEACHING & DEVELOPMENT:

 

  1. Act as a clinical supervisor to junior clinical staff – completing appraisals and agreeing

      personal development plans.

 

  1. Promote clinical innovations and encourage evidence-based practices within the unit.

 

  1. Assist in the developments of components for a teaching program for use within  the

      unit.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE/MANAGERIAL:

 

  1. Assist with duty rotas as required by the Senior Sisters/Charge Nurse.
  2. Be responsible for the authorisation of timesheets/overtime as and when required.
  3. Team Leader Nurse as required.
  4. Implement and ensure adherence to all Trust policies.
  5. Effectively contribute to the achievement of Trust targets.
  6. Support the Ward Manager and Matron for Medicine in effective resource management.

 

  1. Participate in the identification of cost improvement initiatives with Ward Managers and Matron.

 

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT:

 

  1. Support effective intra and inter departmental communication.

 

  1. Provide competent and consistent leadership to the ward/department team.

 

  1. Undertake PDRs for junior colleagues and ensure PDPs are in place.

 

  1. Participate in training and development for all staff, ensuring that accurate records are maintained.

 

  1. Be actively involved in the induction and mentorship for newly deployed and newly qualified staff.

 

  1. Ensure that educational objectives of student nurses and other learners are met and the progress of each student/learner is monitored.

 

  1. Participate in the management of sickness/absence.

 

 

SECTION 2 - KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

 

  1. Possess evidenced based clinical knowledge appropriate to the General Medicine area.

 

  1. Utilise own clinical expertise and knowledge to create and promote an environment conducive to meeting the educational and developmental needs of all clinical staff.

 

SECTION 3 - EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

 

  1. Partake frequently in tasks requiring physical effort for long periods.

 

  1. Regularly deal with bodily fluids and soiled linen within a span of duty.

 

  1. Manage and participate in distressing unpredictable situations within a span of duty.

 

  1. Concentrate for long periods and respond to unpredictable patient and staff demands.

 

  1. Provide and receive complex information that will require empathy, tact, reassurance and communicate in situations where there maybe barriers to understanding.

 

  1. Defusing of aggressive situations using complex communication skills, experience and information.

 

Work with patients with mental health needs and liaise with relevant speciality in relation to clinical management.
