Job overview

To work collaboratively with the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme hub; coordinating and providing care from the screening centre to address the needs of individuals arising as a consequence of the screening programme. To act as the patient’s advocate, supporting them throughout all stages of the screening process. To coordinate health promotion services to improve access to screening by all sections of society.

The role is varied and ranges from conducting nurse led clinics and attending colonoscopy sessions to supporting patients through the screening process, attending multi-disciplinary team meetings, engaging in health promotion activities and undertaking audits.

Main duties of the job

To coordinate and provide care from the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) centre to address the needs of individuals arising as a consequence of bowel cancer screening.

To act as the patient’s advocate supporting them throughout all stages of the screening process.

To participate in health promotion activities with local health promotion services to improve access to screening by all sections of society.

You will join a supportive and professional team working across the county and enjoy a positive relationship with the Endoscopy and Cancer Services on both sites.  The successful applicant must be a registered health professional with substantial years post registration experience, preferably with a Gastroenterology or Endoscopy background.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with appropriate teaching/assessing qualification. With substantial years post registration experience including 1 year in a related specialty.

Enhanced IT skills.

To undertake the post graduate training in Bowel Cancer Screening within the first year of employment. To use this specialist knowledge to enhance practice in all parts of the role.

Act as a role model and resource for all staff disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.

Demonstrate evidence of communication/problem solving skills within a team, including organisational and planning skills. To participate in own and teams personal and professional development. Ensuring progression through Individual Performance Development review and KSF outline.

Demonstrate good presentation skills or willingness to develop these skills.

Patient examination and history taking skills or willingness to undertake course.

Demonstrate understanding of research and evidence based practice, and participate as required in audit.

There will be liaison with several specialities regarding patient care to ensure the safest and highest quality care is delivered throughout their journey. The successful applicant will be involved from the point of referral to diagnosis, providing clinical support and counselling during what can be a very worrying time.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with substantial years post registration
  • GCSE/equivalent English & Maths to C Grade or higher

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with patients with lower GI disease or cancer
  • Evidence of having been responsible for day to day supervision or coordination of staff in a clinical setting
  • Demonstrate ability to work across the Trust within a variety of settings in different hospitals.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Communicate sensitive information and address barriers to understanding with a wide diversity of patients, carers, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Organise and prioritise own workload / caseload of patients within the multi disciplinary team. Demonstrate ability to organise self.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate effective presentation skills (to patients, GPs, consultants, multidisciplinary teams within primary / secondary care).
  • Be able to examine patients and take accurate histories with excellent customer care skills.
