MID ESSEX HOSPITAL SERVICES NHS TRUST
BROOMFIELD HOSPITAL
Locum Consultant in Elderly Medicine
Starting in March 2018

Applications are invited for a full-time Locum Consultant post in the Department of Medicine for the Elderly (DoME) at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford. Less than full time arrangements may also be considered.

We are looking for a Consultant Geriatrician to primarily lead daily ward rounds and contribute to the multidisciplinary board round on one of our Medicine for the Elderly wards. You will be supported by a junior medical team. You will share the ward with another Consultant Geriatrician. Some cross cover arrangements will be expected. There will be responsibility for medical outliers on a ‘buddy ward’ should this be needed. You will support the innovative Frailty Unit in the Emergency Village. You will undertake an outpatient clinic and would ideally contribute to the Frailty weekend on call rota (currently 1:7 weekends).

The successful applicant will provide, along with the existing Elderly Medicine team, an effective specialist service in Elderly Medicine for the people of Mid Essex. The Trust has a reputation for providing high quality well-structured care in a friendly and supportive environment. The candidate should ideally have Consultant Experience and hold MRCP. A CCT in Geriatric Medicine is desirable. Candidates with a General / Acute medical background will be considered.

The DoME is an exciting and expanding specialty which has undergone significant change in the last few years. DoME works closely with the department of Stroke Medicine. The DoME now has eight substantive Consultants with a range of sub-speciality interests. It provides acute and community cover and a range of Outpatient clinics. It has an established teaching program.

The DoME has three base wards:
1. A 12-bedded Frailty Assessment Unit (FAU) with anticipated length of stay of 72 hours or less
2. Baddow Ward (26 bedded area) for longer stay older frail patients + ‘buddy ward’
3. Braxted Ward (26 bedded area) for longer stay older frail patients

A 12-bedded Frailty Assessment Unit (FAU) was launched in September 2016 based on the emergency floor. This innovative development incorporates both acute and community employees and is a consultant led service 7 days a week. The frailty team has a daily presence in the Emergency Department (ED) focusing on admission avoidance and works closely with our ED and Acute Medical colleagues

The DoME has two twenty-six bedded longer stay geriatric wards (Baddow and Braxted). The wards are multidisciplinary and are based on CGA methodology. There are daily board rounds in the week day plus a rapid ‘touch base’ round at 2pm. The wards are Consultant led. Both wards are designated ‘dementia friendly’ zones and Gold Service Framework dementia care is promoted.

The DoME takes part in the General Medical on call. It is desirable that this candidate contribute to this in a 1:30 capacity.

Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is committed to the highest standards of recruitment to ensure we attract and employ the very best of candidates. We recommend that you come for a pre-visit before interview to meet the team if you are interested in this appointment. The initial locum period is for 1 year although the department is always looking to expand with an ever increasing presence in both acute and community settings.

Only short listed candidates will be notified. We are an equal opportunity employer welcoming applications from all sections of the community, and we operate the Children’s Safeguard Review Policy and screen applicants accordingly. Applicants who consider they have a disability will be short listed for interview if they meet the essential criteria. We also operate strict screening procedures for posts with access to vulnerable adults and children.

The trust currently does not reimburse interview expenses.
