Job overview

The Pharmacy Department at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (Worthing and St. Richards) is delighted to be able to offer a full-time vacancy for a Band 3 Senior Pharmacy Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic, friendly and progressive department who are extremely compassionate about staff engagement, culture and Improvement.

Main duties of the job

You will have a leadership role within the department, involving the management of Band 2 assistants within an area of responsibility of the dispensary i.e. Supply Services.

You will be a logical thinker with good communication skills as the role must support the smooth running of the supply services team and as a leader, you will perform tasks such workflow monitoring to ensure orders reach the wards and external units in a timely manner. This will include picking and dispensing stock from the pharmacy stores and robot, processing returns, ordering consumables and ensuring driver collections are met. At all times working to reduce medicines waste.

You will need to be computer literate, although some support will be provided. The post holders are expected to use judgment and initiative in solving their own and their team's problems but refer to senior staff when necessary. Education and Learning is an important part of our service and you will be working alongside the learning and development team to provide training to new and existing staff.

You will have a friendly and approachable personality and a willingness to learn.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be involved in the daily operation of the Supply Services team which will include topping up the wards stock medication using the computer system CMM and supplying external units under a Wholesaler Dealers Licence.

  • To assist in supplying the provision of a safe, efficient and effective pharmaceutical service at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.  
  • To provide line management of staff in line with departmental procedures.
  • To dispense stock items for wards and theatres in line with departmental procedures.
  • To dispense stock items to external units under a wholesaler dealers licence.
  • To participate in checking team members work when supplying to external units.
  • To be responsible for the specific key areas of the Supply Services team: Approving annual leave ensuring a robust roster is in place, sickness monitoring and return to work interviews, annual appraisals of team members and overseeing the day to day running of the team.

Interview Criteria

Essential criteria
  • Pharmacy Service Skills NVQ level 2
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy or other pharmacy Setting
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership experience or qualification
  • 3 GCSEs grade C or above or equivalent in Maths, English Language
