This is an unique opportunity to implement and develop Sussex’s  Spinal Cord Injury provision.  

NHS England is supporting regional Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) units and affiliated Major Trauma Centres to improve pathways of care as part of the National SCI transformation programme. University Hospital Sussex is recruiting a team of experience Therapist/Nursing staff to develop and deliver a regional model of care that supports people living with Spinal Cord injury across  Sussex.  

This is an exciting opportunity for applicants with clinical experience and skills within spinal care  to play a key role in delivering this new proposed model. The successful applicant will work with colleagues across health and social care to implement and develop this service, which will support people along their journey, from their acute admission, transfer to inpatient rehabilitation and onwards into the community setting, through the provision of outreach support and advice for the person, their carers and for our community colleagues.

The successful candidate will have expert practice, proven clinical leadership, advanced knowledge, multidisciplinary teamworking in the field of SCI. They will lead a team of therapists to work in various settings, they will be responsible for the day to day management of the spinal cord injury therapy team and the education and training of staff involved in SCI care.

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Responsible and accountable for the operational management of the SCI teams (band 6 OT, PT, rehab support worker and admin) team by undertaking a clinical team leader role in planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the SCI Service on a day-to-day basis, and allocating workforce appropriately.  
  • Provide professional clinical leadership as an advanced practitioner within the field of SCI, working to a highly specialist level in critical care, Major Trauma, Neurosurgery, rehab centres and community areas.  
  • To communicate effectively with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals and other agencies working with patients with SCI. It will be important to work closely with Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and family members to support patients with any communication difficulties and use advanced communication skills to promote shared understanding.  
  • To maintain comprehensive and accurate assessment and treatment records in line with legal, professional, and organisational requirements and to provide timely written reports when required to support appropriate care decisions and avoid delays in transfer of care.  
  • To work closely with spinal practitioners during acute admission.  
  • To ensure that patients, their families, and care teams are fully informed and supported throughout all SCI patient journeys.

  • To ensure that expert clinical knowledge and skills are shared with the South East SCI Network (when set up), NHSE and all providers of care to SCI patients throughout the life–long patient pathway.   
  • To maintain close links, communication and liaison between all staff and people involved in SCI patient care, always promoting good working relationships characterised by open communication, trust, and respect.  Working as an autonomous practitioner, to carry a high clinical caseload of highly complex patients providing specialist assessment and treatment within the Major Trauma, Neurosurgery and Rehabilitation teams. 
  • Work in collaboration with therapists and nursing staff on Critical Care, Neuro, Trauma and Rehab areas to ensure best practise is provided to all patients on the SCI pathway including outliers. This includes the use of advanced clinical reasoning skills to provide highly specialist support to medical staff and other health professions. 
  • Use professional and clinical leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive training and personal development plan for all allied health staff (and other health professionals) across the SCI pathway.  
  • To be guided by National Standards where they exist to develop departmental policies.  
  • Support the development of strategies for the service. To be involved with development and clinical governance of the SCI service across the whole organisation, in conjunction with the Departmental management teams and Clinical Director of Major trauma, Neurosurgery/spinal and rehabilitation. 
  • To link in with the Head of Therapies for RSCH (Royal Sussex County Hospital) as required.
