Specialist Critical Care Dietitian

Practice autonomously, providing high quality clinical practice in the specialist area.
Be proactive and collaborative in clinical decision making underpinned by an enhanced level of theoretical and practical knowledge.
Use enhanced clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge of service users in specialist area.
Undertake specialist holistic nutritional assessments including the calculation of nutritional requirements, interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometry, clinical history and other physical parameters in those with complex needs.
To be experienced in the use of anthropometric equipment for assessment of nutritional status, such as weighing equipment, hand grip dynamometer, callipers and interpretation of results.
To develop a suitable dietetic treatment plan based on evidence-based practice and provide advanced nutritional advice to service users, in collaboration with their carers, where needs are complex. This involves the interpretation and communication of complex and sensitive information in an understandable form.
To develop and implement ICU and ward based nutritional protocols and procedures including nutritional screening, initiation of out of hours enteral feeding, monitoring food and fluid intake, managing dietary requirements, etc.
Where appropriate, to advise and liaise with the catering staff concerning the dietary needs for service users. To monitor the ICU and ward based catering service and act accordingly.
Demonstrate a level of knowledge in relation to pattern of disease or disorder, marker of condition progression and range of treatment available at each stage of disorder or condition.
To provide expert dietetic advice to the multidisciplinary team, through attendance and participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds and patient meetings.
To be responsible for ensuring written and electronic patient records are completed for all patient contacts including statistical activity data records in accordance with professional, departmental and trust standards.
To monitor and review the outcomes of nutritional care plans and adjusts to facilitate achievement of the desired goals in the light of changing medical treatment and personal circumstances.
To provide clinical support and cover for other staff as requested by the Nutrition and Dietetic Service Manager.
To supervise and co-ordinate the safe and timely discharge of patients on artificial nutritional support, liaising with hospital and community services.
To advise on appropriate use of prescribable nutritional products within the critical care service and to general practitioners.
To train, supervise and appraise Band 5 dietitians and dietetic assistants within the team.
To develop and evaluate multi-professional teaching sessions. To develop educational resources such as teaching packs, case studies and guidelines.
To provide training on critical care nutrition to staff groups, including nurses, doctors and non-specialist dietitians as required.
To plan student training programmes for their critical care weeks, including tutorials and peer assisted learning sessions. To take the lead in student supervision and assessment. To act as keyworker for student dietitians throughout their placements as required.
To manage and prioritise own workload and assist junior staff to do so.
To maintain accurate and timely dietetic patient records (paper and electronic) in line with national and local record keeping standard

HCPC Registration.
Demonstrable dietetics experience in an acute NHS setting.

Knowledge & Experience

Demonstrable evidence of post-registration dietetic experience in a wide range of NHS acute clinical areas.
Extensive demonstrable experience in enteral feeding and knowledge of enteral feeding tubes.
Proven knowledge of nutrition support and best dietetic practice in relation to common clinical conditions.
HCPC Professional Registration and BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent.

Critical care and/or major trauma dietetic experience.
Parenteral Nutrition experience.
Demonstrable experience of developing evidenced based literature, guidelines or protocols.

Job Summary

Our work in Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) is central to the provision and improvement of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. This work enables us to support approximately half of stem cell transplants carried out in England each year through a network of GMP grade laboratories. We also carry out translational research and development activities with academic and commercial partners to ensure we are at the forefront of improvements to transplantation and related fields. Our expertise in GMP, quality and regulatory matters ensures that we always maintain the highest standards in the first-class service we offer.

You will be working as part of a laboratory team, including clinical and biomedical scientists together with other health care professionals. You will be involved in the production of cell therapies and the role you perform will directly contribute to saving and improving patient’s lives.

You will have the opportunity to learn new skills particularly related to the production of new cell therapies which are being developed for testing in clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will lead in the development and maintenance of scientific and technical expertise within a modern well equipped cell therapy laboratory. You will also be involved in providing training and guidance to healthcare scientists in your area of expertise.

Your responsibilities will include:

· Analysing, interpreting, validating, and reporting the results of routine and complex / specialist investigations, working at the level of responsibility and conduct required of a registered Biomedical Scientist

· Analysing and performing complex/specialist testing and processing of cells and/or tissues for cryopreservation and therapeutic clinical use using complex/specialist scientific equipment such as flow cytometers and cell selection/depletion protocols and maintain equipment to the required standards.

· Receiving and communicating highly complex and specialist advice to/from internal and external clinicians, nurses and scientific staff on for example test results.

· Ensuring cells and/or tissue products meet all specifications necessary for patient safety and therapeutic use according to internal and external quality requirements and operating within the boundaries of good manufacturing and laboratory practice.

· Supervising and coordinating other staff, working late some weekday evenings and/or weekends as required.

You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

· In depth knowledge of transfusion/transplantation science.

· High level of expertise in relevant transfusion specialism, ideally demonstrated by publications.

· Knowledge and evidence of application of the standards of Good Manufacturing Practice, HTA and MHRA regulations, JACIE guidelines and other relevant or statutory guidelines.

· Supervisory experience, including training and mentoring of colleagues.

· Experience of working in a stem cell, tissue services, Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I), Haematology, diagnostic or testing service environment.

· Experience of working with Information Technology such as Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and high level of proficiency in relevant specialised laboratory techniques/ environments.

· Demonstrable experience in research and development projects.

Qualifications and Training

· MSc in transfusion/transplantation or relevant science. OR IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma. OR PhD or Professional Doctorate in a relevant field. OR Alternative training and equivalent experience.

· Registration with Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist / Clinical Scientist, which must be maintained.

· Member of a professional body e.g., British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS)/ British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (BSHI).

· Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
