There are 18 dedicated Haematology beds, including 10 hepa-filtered side rooms for neutropenic patients and special need requirements. There is a dedicated Day Unit providing facilities for administering chemotherapy, transfusions, performing bone marrow biopsies and for the review of unwell attenders. The Haematology service is well supported by an established Oncology/Radiotherapy Service, Palliative Medicine Service including inpatient unit, Clinical Psychologists, interpreters and bereavement support staff.

The Haematology laboratories are based at the Royal Derby Hospital and are integrated with Clinical Chemistry and Immunology. The main laboratory accommodation is in new purpose built facilities. Samples are transported to the Haematology and routine Coagulation analysers via a GLP tracking system. Full Blood counts are performed on five Sysmex XN analysers, slides made and stained on SP-10 slide maker/stainer and slides then processed on DI-60 digital morphology analyser for image review.

Coagulation tests are done on four Sysmex CS coagulometers. Platelet function testing is done with PFA-200. Thrombophilia genetic testing is done with a Hain Lifescience Fluorocycler.

The Trust has in recent years seen the opening of a graduate entry Medical School - a satellite of the University of Nottingham, which has greatly enhanced the teaching and research opportunities for medical staff.
