Job overview

Working Full or Part time

The successful candidate will be a full or part time appointment in Radiology. The post is in interventional radiology.

The successful candidate will integrate into the team of existing consultants to provide a complete interventional radiology service and to form part of the diagnostic imaging service including the reporting of CT, MRI and Plain films.

Chester is the host Trust for the South Mersey Arterial Centre (SMart) and the interventional radiology service is integral to supporting vascular surgery across the wider region. The SMart centre provides vascular services across Chester, Warrington and Wirral and this post will have a key role in developing vascular service across the network.

The post whilst primarily based at Chester will provide the candidate with opportunities to increase their interventional practice across Warrington and Wirral as part of the interventional radiology network supporting SMart.

The post will support the provision of a 24/7 IR emergency service across the network.

The post is a full-time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job share are encouraged to apply. If a part-time or job-share person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed with the appointee on a personal basis. 

Main duties of the job

  • Interventional radiology, vascular and non-vascular
  • Contribute to the general workload of the department including ultrasound, CT, MRI and plain film reporting
  • Participate in MDTs as appropriate
  • Share with colleagues in the training of SpRs
  • Share with colleagues in the training, supervision and support of trainee and qualified ultrasonographers, and when appropriate of radiographers undergoing skill mix training
  • Participate in the general development of the Radiology Department by involvement with departmental or Trust projects/committees, equipment procurement, administration and management, audit, teaching, research, fostering good working relations within the department and good liaison with hospital clinicians and GPs
  • Participate in the interventional radiologist on-call rota

Working for our organisation

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.                                                                 

 The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £23 (standard) or £43 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first three months of employment.

New entrants to the NHS will commence on the minimum of the scale stated above.

  • Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for be within six months of interview)

Qualifications

  • FRCR or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable criteria
  • A relevant Higher Qualification
  • Fellowship in appropriate subspecialty
