Main duties of the job
CARIS Team Clinical Lead
Length of Contract: Permanent
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated consultant to join us as our Clinical Lead for the Congenital Anomaly Registration & Information Service (CARIS) team in Public Health Wales (PHW).
The Clinical Lead will provide collaborative leadership to support the Public Health consultant, CARIS manager and CARIS team to deliver work, advise on clinical matters, and strengthen clinical links to ensure and improve the quality of our surveillance data. The Clinical Lead will also have opportunities to forge academic collaborations, lead or contribute to academic projects, and support students and trainees on placement.
The Consultant Lead must already be in a substantive AAC appointed post within the NHS in Wales in a clinical specialty relevant to the work of CARIS. The Clinical Lead must have permission from their substantive employer to dedicate 2 sessions per week to the CARIS team. These sessions for PHW must be included in the consultant’s agreed job plan (undertaken with their substantive employer) and acknowledged as part of their whole-practice appraisal.
The CARIS team are based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea. However, the role is open to any consultant meeting the person specification requirements in Wales and will require some travel to the base office and other PHW/NHS locations when required. There will also be flexibility to undertake work from other PHW locations across Wales and to work remotely .

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Candidates must hold GMC registration and be licensed to practice.
Main duties of the job
- Working on the CARIS outputs, including the annual report that accompanies the official statistics release
- Planning and organising Annual meeting(s)
- Supporting the Consultant in Public Health Medicine, CARIS manager and other team members as appropriate
- Attending regular team meetings, and ad hoc meetings as required
- Provide academic support to the team and our academic colleagues
- Provide clinical knowledge and help with coding of difficult cases

- IT skills in particular, experience of using word processing and spreadsheet software
- Previous experience of academic work, such as conference presentations and/or published papers

- Appointed as a substantive Medical Consultant in the NHS in Wales in a clinical specialty relevant to the surveillance work of the CARIS team
- Good understanding of policies and regulations relating to clinical governance and data governance
- Ability to identify, develop and evidence effective working relationships with key stakeholders, and to influence people and policy
- Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with different stakeholders
- Ability to work effectively across teams and diverse professional backgrounds
- IT skills in particular, experience of using word processing and spreadsheet software
- Previous experience of academic work, such as conference presentations and/or published papers
Desirable criteria
- • Continuing Professional Development
- Experience of organising and leading training sessions and/or the development of postgraduate education
- Experience using and access to statistical analyses software packages
- Higher degree of medical and/or academic relevance (e.g. masters or MD)
