Job overview

The Radiation Protection Service Cardiff are recruiting a qualified and experienced Radiation Protection Adviser and Medical Physics Expert to join our expanding team.

 

Based at Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff, the role will focus on supporting our customers in diagnostic and interventional radiology, across a regional footprint, to enhance their compliance against both the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017.

 

This opportunity is advertised at Agenda for Change Band 8B (between £58,972 and £68,525 depending on experience). The position is permanent and full-time (37.5 hours per week).

 

We offer flexible and hybrid working, and have a track record for supporting the development of our team of scientists, technologists and administrative personnel through formal and informal routes.

 

We work closely with clinical and service colleagues across all radiation-related healthcare disciplines –radiology (diagnostic, screening, interventional and cardiology); nuclear medicine (diagnostic [conventional and PET] and therapeutic); and radiotherapy (external beam and brachytherapy). We also have close links with nearby academic institutions, and lecture on the Cardiff University BSc, Cardiff University MSc, Swansea University MSc, and FRCR courses.

Main duties of the job

·         Acting as a Radiation Protection Adviser for the service and to be appointed in this role by Velindre University NHS Trust and its client organisations

·         Acting as Medical Physics Expert for diagnostic radiology in health care, medical research and development and teaching for Velindre NHS Trust and its client organisations.

·         Providing leadership to a team of scientific and technical staff.

·         Managing projects undertaken in support of developments in radiation protection both within Velindre NHS Trust and its client organisations 

 

The scope of this work will extend beyond the statutory requirements detailed in the regulations and associated guidance documents to include the implementation of advances in philosophy, good practice and technological innovations as recommended by national and international organisations concerned with radiation protection, diagnostic radiology physics and metrology.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc Medical Physics or equivalent
  • UK HCPC Clinical Scientist Registration, but for non-UK candidates the certainty of getting it.
  • Accreditation as a Radiation Protection Adviser
  • ccreditation as a Medical Physics Expert , or ability to apply for this within one year of starting post
Desirable criteria
  • PhD in Medical Physics.
  • Publication record in diagnostic radiology physics, and/or radiation protection.
  • Accreditation as a Radioactive Waste Advisor, or ability to apply for this within one year of starting post.
  • Eligibility to hold MIPEM, or FIPEM, or equivalent status.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the application of radiation protection practice in the field of diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine compatible with acknowledgement of Radiation Protection Adviser status.
  • Involvement with advising upon the application of radiation protection legislation.
  • Appropriate experience compatible with acknowledgement of Medical Physics Expert status in diagnostic radiology/physics/imaging with ionising radiations.
  • To have experience of supervising staff, obtained whether by direct experience in a supervisory or management role or by possession of a recognised supervisory or management qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate experience compatible with acknowledgement of Radioactive Waste Adviser.
  • Experience in the application of radiation protection practise of radiation metrology
  • Involvement in national or international organisations or groups relevant to radiation protection and/or diagnostic radiology (e.g. IPEM RP SIG, IPEM DR SIG, BIR SIGs, SRP membership).
  • Experience acting as the Qualified Person for radiation protection instrument calibration and testing.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to communicate difficult scientific issues to scientists an non-scientist with goof verbal, written and audio-visual production & presentation skills.
  • Good negotiator in advising on the implementation of statutory requirements where there may be local disagreement or competing requirements from legislation or professional guidance relating to other areas of endeavour.
  • Advanced computer analysis, data manipulation and its display.
  • Teaching skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Familiarity with a range of medical image processing software packages.
  • Familiarity with designing customised database applications
