This position is for a mechanically biased apprenticeship, within MEMO Clinical Engineering, based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The successful candidate will complete their apprenticeship within the Mechanical Services Team, who specialise in maintaining and installing Medical Gas Pipeline Systems.

MEMO Clinical Engineering department is looking to recruit a self-motivated Apprentice Mechanical Engineer to join the busy and enthusiastic Mechanical Services Team who maintain and repair specialist Medical Gas Pipeline Systems (MGPS) equipment used to support patient care. Academic and on the job training will be provided, and an allowance for study time to support completion of relevant qualifications is also included.
You must be able to demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity in using a range of engineering tools and test equipment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach to working in both a clinical and workshop environments. Experience and/or interest in fault-finding techniques of mechanical/electrical equipment is desirable.
The apprenticeship is fixed term for 4 years, and upon apprenticeship completion you will move to a band 4 position.

Band 3 Apprentice Mechanical Engineer to undertake a 4 year training program:
You will receive full training throughout the 4-year apprenticeship, provided from both in-house and external training providers, as well as academic training and qualifications from Weston College.

During the training programme you will be supported to develop a range of practical and problem solving skills that will enable you to undertake maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of equipment that is found within a Medical Gas Pipeline System (MGPS). This will include routine servicing and breakdown maintenance, within a hospital environment.

- Five GCSE’s at grade C or above in science based subjects, to include Maths and English or equivalent

- Equivalent education in engineering subjects to the necessary qualifications above
Knowledge and Experience

- Interest in mechanical and electrical technology

- Interest in Computer systems, Microsoft applications
- Knowledge of relevant legislations and national standard e.g. HTM 02:01, ISO 13485, Health & Safety, RIDDOR, COSHH, Infection Control
- Experience of working in a service environment
Skills and Abilities

- Use of fine tools for equipment fabrication / assembly /adjustment
- Full UK Manual Driving Licence (D), or working towards
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to manage time effectively
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to understand of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure
- Ability to manoeuvre medium/heavy weight in varying locations
- Ability to use Microsoft Office/Works, to set up documents and spreadsheets
- Physical accuracy and good hand and eye coordination for small parts working
- Ability to work under pressure and meet reasonable deadlines
- Ability to deal with constantly changing work load and situations
