Job overview

In Birmingham, we have about 24,000 people who have a learning disability. In our fast-paced day-to-day lives, many of them face challenges with daily living and being an active member in society. At Learning Disabilities, we are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to partner with us and make a difference for our patients.

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides high quality, accessible and responsive community and specialist services within Birmingham and the West Midlands. We deliver over 100 clinical services, out in people’s homes and in over 300 hospitals, health centres and clinics. We provide services for adults, children, people with learning disabilities, those with rehabilitation needs and also dental services.

The post holder will work with other t Psychiatrists and integrated multidisciplinary teams to meet the specialist healthcare needs of the population of approximately 1.1 million.

As a service, our community focus coupled with expansion of established community forensic and intensive support teams leave us well placed to meet the challenges arising from the Transforming Care agenda. Main duties of the job

  • To work autonomously and will be responsible for their own caseload.
  • The completion of certain mandatory assessments such as the HoNOS – LD.
  • To liaise with the MDT and GP regarding any change in treatment & maintaining clear & accurate prescribing records.
  • Compiling a patient’s history from a number of sources, and preparing case summaries and discharge summaries
  • Preparing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings and giving evidence
  • To take part in weekly multidisciplinary team meeting and lead where appropriate
  • To be responsible for relevant documentation follow-up and any necessary discussions/communications with relatives, carers and other disciplines.
  • To provide medical cover for daytime psychiatric emergencies.
  • Any other responsibilities as negotiated between the post holder
  • Participation in the consultant out of hours on-call rota and reciprocal cover arrangements for annual and study leave.
  • Undertake teaching and educational initiatives to develop skills of the Local Multidisciplinary team and the wider Learning Disability Service
  • To maintain and develop professional competencies using the process of The Royal College of Psychiatrists’ monitored Personal Development Plan.
  • To comply with all Trust policies including Equal Opportunities policies and to promote equality of access to healthcare at all times.
  • Utilise electronic patient records system to maintain clinical records, clinical coding, outcomes and activity.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English & Maths or equivalent
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Programmes
  • Ability to demonstrate significant administrative and office experience
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualificationsdence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement and experience
  • Additional experience e.g. neurodevelopmental disorders, psychological therapies, and liaison.
