The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) has 31 beds. There are 20 general paediatric intensive care beds and 11 cardiac intensive care beds. The unit supports a wide range of medical and surgical specialities, including supra-regional services such as hepatology, liver transplantation, stem cell transplantation and burns critical care. The hospital is a paediatric Major Trauma Centre and the unit is commissioned by NHS England as a respiratory ECLS Centre. The department admits around 1400 patients per year. 85% of the admissions are ventilated during their stay.  The average length of stay is 5.7 days; crude mortality rate is 5.6% with Standardised Mortality Ratio of 0.99. Our cardiac programme involves between 500-550 surgical cases a year, of which 380-430 are performed on bypass. The PICU has significant and expertise in safety, quality improvement, education & training as well as research & development, with many active clinical trials.

This substantive consultant post has 10 PAs, of which 8 are clinical PAs and 2 SPAs. The appointee
will undertake clinical and SPA sessions in PICU and KIDS on a 50:50 basis.
The appointee will join the dedicated PIC and KIDS teams to provide high quality service delivery,
maintain standards and protocols, to provide teaching and perform audit.

The appointee will be expected to take part in the delivery and development of clinical services
within the Trust’s Service and Financial Framework and in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy. The
post-holder will also be expected to participate in the activities of appropriate Departmental,
Directorate or Trust Committees and Working Groups as required.

  • FRCA/MRCP/MRCPCH/Equivalent
  • On GMC Specialist Register for base specialty on commencement of post
  • Within six months of obtaining CCT for UK trainees, on the date of interview or equivalent for overseas trainees
  • APLS/PALS/equivalent certification

  • European Trauma Course (ETC) certification

Knowledge & Clinical expertise in specialty/sub-specialty

  • Minimum of two years training in an approved paediatric intensive care medicine department plus six months (minimum) of anaesthetics (stand-alone), or completed PICM GRID training in a unit/rotation and been signed off by GMC (approval via PICM ISAC) - OR - Existing practicing consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine including transport
  • Or Equivalent with evidence that this training has been signed off
  • Experience in management of cardiac patients including post-op cardiac surgical patients
  • Level 3 Safeguarding training

  • Experience in transfer of patients being considered for ECLS
  • Experience in neonatal transport
  • Experience in caring for children on ECLS
  • Experience in Neurosurgical intensive care and Trauma management
  • Experience in caring for patients with Liver disease including post -transplantation care.
