Band 5 Lead Ophthalmic Technician

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Lead Ophthalmic Technician to join our growing team Ophthalmic Technicians at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be responsible for leading a team of 12 Ophthalmic Technicians working across Berkshire, and there will be the requirement to work at our sites in both Reading and Windsor.

Main duties of the job

Alongside undertaking clinics including OCT scanning, Optos imaging and visual field assessment, the Lead Ophthalmic Technician will also be responsible for the training and development of ophthalmic technicians and will support the orthoptic team in provision of a comprehensive timetable for covering of face to face and virtual ophthalmology clinics.

The Lead Ophthalmic technician will work alongside clinical engineering to ensure that equipment is maintained and serviced in a timely manner, and will be responsible for reporting issues with clinical equipment to their line manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties including, but not limited to, OCT scanning, Visual Field Assessment, Corneal Topography, Specular Microscopy, Optos and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography. 

Leadership of the Ophthalmic Technician team, including supporting their training and development, rostering and undertaking any management responsibility delegated by the Head or Deputy Head Orthoptists. 

Responsible for liaising with clinical engineering regarding equipment issues and ensuring that equipment is serviced and up to date.

Essential criteria
  • Degree in ophthalmic imaging or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Registration with the academy for healthcare sciences

Experience

  • Significant experience as a senior technician (band 4)
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance
  • Experience mentoring staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience leading a team
