Job overview

The consultant post provides medical leadership to the multidisciplinary clinical team working on the ward and provide clinical expertise in the assessment and treatment of inpatients admitted to inpatient WAA adult psychiatric unit. The role will involve working closely with nurse consultant, consultant psychologist, specialty grade doctor, the junior ward doctor and the nursing team and ward manager to provide medical assessment, diagnosis and formulation to patients admitted, working closely with patients and carers and also working with partner agencies and other professionals. The job provides opportunities to address mental health difficulties with comorbid physical health problems and help the persons overall recovery.

Main duties of the job

The consultant will provide clinical and medical expertise in the expert management of the severe enduring mental illnesses of the patients admitted to the ward.

The consultant will provide medical and clinical leadership to the ward team working with the fellow consultant colleague working into the same ward, nurse consultant, specialty doctor and ward junior doctor to the assessment, diagnosis, formulation and treatment and management to patients admitted to the ward.

The consultant will provide relevant assessments and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act. The consultant will liaise and work jointly with other teams, agencies and professionals to facilitate the treatment and progression of the patient’s recovery through the person’s treatment pathway.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide medical assessment, diagnosis and formulation to patients admitted under the post holder’s care.
  • To assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act.
  • To act as Responsible clinician for patients detained under the mental health act and to have section 12 approval to detain patient when required.
  • To provide urgent assessments including S136 and liaison assessments.
  • To provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service for the provision of) up to date, evidence based interventions for the patients admitted under the post holder’s care.
  • To collaborate with GP’s, Community Treatment Team and primary care clinicians regarding the physical health care of patients admitted under the post holder’s care.
  • To provide leadership, consultation, advice and guidance within the adult acute pathway.
  • To work collaboratively with Senior Clinical Colleagues in the Inpatient Care team.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues in other specialist mental health teams.
  • To take a lead role with the Team Manager and other colleagues in service improvements and development.
  • To contribute to the ongoing training and development programme within the team.
  • To train and supervise junior medical staff, medical students and other allied professions.
  • To lead, collaborate and advise on research and audit projects in the team, within the clinical governance agenda.
  • To complete administrative tasks necessary for the fulfilment of the clinical role.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Registration with the GMC (or eligible to become registered) with a licence to practice
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
  • Approved as Approved clinician under the MHA 1983 or eligible for approval
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge in the field of old age psychiatry
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation
Desirable criteria
  • An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
  • Wide clinical experience in old age psychiatry in different clinical settings
  • Experience of Clinical Audit
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in multi agency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
  • Experience in service management or development

Skills

Essential criteria
  • High level of clinical skills
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders in Adult Psychiatry
  • Excellent communication skills
