Scientific and Technical: Entry requirements

Medical Technical Officers (MTO's)

MTOs assist medical staff with the diagnosis and treatment of disease using highly complex equipment. Examples of MTOs include:

  • Audiological Physiologists
  • Respiratory Physiologists
  • Neurophysiology Physiologists
  • Perfusionists
  • Operating Department Practitioners (ODP/ODA)
  • Medical Technology (Medical Physics/Clinical Engineering)
  • Anatomical Pathology Technicians
  • Pharmacy Technicians
  • Cardiological Physiologists
  • Hearing Therapists

Entry Requirements

Normal entry for respiratory, cardiology, audiology, and neurology physiologists (the term now used in place of technicians) is that once having science A. levels, or access course, applicants take a training post which includes practical training and block release to study for the BSc Clinical Physiology degree funded by the NHS.

Graduates from other science degrees are welcomed but entrants will be required to take an additional higher educational course and gain vocational experience to enter the profession.
