Roles within human resources include:

  • HR Assistant
  • HR Administrator
  • HR Advisor
  • HR Team Manager
  • HR Manager ( Assistant Director)
  • HR Head of service

Human Resource Management is sometimes referred to as Personnel Management. Responsibilities include recruitment and selection of staff, staff appraisal, and staff development and training. Human resources staff also provide information on employment legislation and welfare, and ensure that all laws and regulations are effectively adhered to.

HR Managers are sometimes involved in workforce planning. They may work for one or more Directorates (e.g. Surgery, Day Care or Accident and Emergency) where they will provide HR support and advice to the general manager responsible for that Directorate. Advice ranges from the redeployment of staff from a ward that is closing to advertising strategies for the recruitment of new staff. HR Managers may have a responsibility for a particular group of staff such as all medical staff working within an NHS Trust.

Entry Requirements

It is possible to enter HR management roles by gaining promotion from a lower administrative or clerical level, after attaining suitable experience and appropriate qualifications.

Other may enter HR management with a degree, via the HR specialism of the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme . The scheme takes 2 years to complete and will incorporate the study of CIPD qualifications.

Minimum eligibility requirements for the management training scheme are as follows:

A 2:2 degree in any subject

OR

A postgraduate qualification (MBA, Masters, PhD)

OR

Degree level equivalent qualifications that are health or management related to include:

  • NVQ level 5 in management
  • Diploma in Management Studies (DMS)
  • Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery or Health Visiting (Dip HE in Nursing) etc
  • Diploma from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Diploma from the College of Occupational Therapy (DCR)
  • Diploma in Social Work (DSW) or the Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW)
