Finance

There are many roles within Finance including finance officer, procurement officer, finance clerk, accounting technician, finance assistant, payments assistant, ledger clerk, financial analyst, and payroll assistant. More senior posts include such roles as payroll manager, finance director, senior buyer, business accountant, head of finance and management accountant.

NHS Finance departments carry out a number of duties including ensuring staff get paid; paying for goods and services; collecting income; managing the IT systems that track all financial activity; gathering and interpreting the financial data required to make day-to-day and strategic management decisions; preparing annual financial reports and co-ordinating with the Inland Revenue, VAT collection and other authorities; checking expenditure and income.

Entry Requirements

You may enter Finance at a clerical level with no qualifications and work your way up as you study for a qualification such as the Association of Accounting Technicians qualification - based on NVQs level 2 to 4. For more senior roles you will need a qualification that is recognised by the Association of Accounting Technicians or the Consultancy Committee of Accountancy Bodies.

You will normally need to be a professional accountant to hold a senior management post.
